I think I remember Emacs 27 will include some improvements in that regard, even without native code compilation.

I don't really like hidden files myself, but my point was more to get you to see the lack of clean hierarchy in just dumping things in $HOME.

Yes, I usually start my shell sessions in $HOME. I also have shell aliases set up so I always see hidden files, and it would drive me crazy if I weren't able to tuck most config files into another directory.

I'm assuming that you accidentally got that statement backwards, because otherwise it doesn't make sense to me. Would you still feel like dropping things in HOME was tidy if hidden files weren't a thing? You can also back up

I think the secret actually consists of having a good set of aesthetic judgments and emotional reactions. The power of these things is precisely that they're involuntary reactions which push or pull you to do the right thing. Thus they

You just took Socrates out of the conversation, though. I think the point is that you can only call Socrates a nihilist by refusing to treat him seriously. From the article: > Thrasymachus’s cynicism is so compelling that Socrates spends

I think it could potentially happen by way of a fork, similar to the history of GCC and EGCS, but it would take a dedicated group of hackers to make it happen. Not one guy doing all the work and a bunch of Guile fans on the sidelines cheeri

GNS from the GNUnet project is the most interesting alternative to DNS that I've come across, and is orthogonal to projects like IPFS and Scuttlebutt (although I don't know much about Dat). It's basically DNS with DHT and som

I just finished setting up Ansible to manage a bunch of Windows laptops. I basically just followed the example of Dag Wieers here[1][2], except that additionally every laptop is roaming with unstable IP addresses. So I used PageKite[3] to d

FFI is slow because the main Go compiler uses a different calling convention than everything else. I couldn't tell you if or how that's related to its concurrency features.

I think humans who didn't find fiction compelling would be incredibly uninspired. How could it be compelling unless the brain mostly reacted to it like it were real? Would science exist without alchemy? Or cell phones without Star Trek

Looking at the man page, it also seems like you won't be able to share work trees between git and got. If you want to use both to operate on a repository you need a separate checkout for each tool.

Yep. My Emacs workflow is a lot like my old terminal workflow, but now it's Emacs+packages instead of terminal+ncurses apps. If you try to do a lot of terminal emulation inside Emacs you'll probably have a bad time.

I don't think it's exactly fair to call AV1 "technically poor". Even if HEVC is better (and I don't know enough to say if it is or not), that would be a bit like calling gzip technically poor because zstd exists.
