Keep in mind that WikiMapia is breaking Google's terms of use and they don't release the data they collect. It's a neat project, but completely orthogonal to OSM.

Keep in mind that OpenStreetMap is a data project, not a maps.google.com replacement project. There are plenty of other ways to look at OSM data. https://tiles.mapbox.com/newmap and http://maps.cloudmade.com/editor let you style the dat

Has anyone other than OP actually seen this in the wild? None of the systems I know about on Comcast here in Chicago have had HTTP manipulated at all today. Maybe they're not doing it here because the 250GB bandwidth cap is "temporarily sus

Two key differences here: 1. The data is now available under the MIT license. This is important because (a) it is a predictable, well-known license that allow businesses to interact with the data without fear of the unknown (license) and (b

The only issue is that with huge data dumps (the buildings dataset here as GeoJSON is ~2GB uncompressed and ~1GB as shapefile) it becomes difficult to make direct pull requests against the data. Indeed they zipped the JSON file up before up

Thanks for your constructive feedback. When I was searching for suggestions I didn't see any way for people to submit changes to the released data back to the organization releasing the data. Getting community feedback is what they cared ab

See my response below [0], but one of the main reasons they did this with GitHub was to try and make it easier to take user contributions. They know their data is wrong and they want help fixing it from the community. As a contributor to Op

As the person that convinced them to use GitHub, I suggested it to them because they were looking for an extremely easy way to bring changes from the community back in to the city's data. I suggested GitHub and GeoJSON because I envisioned

At least Google's process has a bit more benefit than Facebook's: you can see the location data they collect from your phone by turning on Latitude and its history app. They also use this data to improve traffic and map data and (if you hav

I think you're seeing package.json and leaping to Node.js. I think they use the Node package management to help during build.

This started happening about 1.5 years ago on AT&T. Any smart phone that AT&T "knows about" will get a ~$30/mo smartphone data plan added the moment you insert your SIM card into it. You'll get a text message ~30 minutes later sayin

The pixellation here is your phone waiting to download the higher-res vector tile. While it waits for the higher-res tile it draws a bitmap representation of the lower-res tile "above" it.

While it's true that there are "plenty" of map data providers, there are _very few_ that deal with wide swaths of the world. Navteq and TeleAtlas were the go-to providers for worldwide coverage, but you've seen what TeleAtlas data looks lik

I remember way back in 2006 or so when Meraki was a startup trying to sell the hardware units geared towards community wifi systems. A short time after getting the units out into the community they 'pivoted' away from that model and started

Yes, but when you first activate you have to go to the store and convince them to activate a SIM card (or just buy the cheapest phone if they won't budge). Since T-Mo hasn't spun up their 800MHz spectrum yet you won't get 3G on your iPhone,

By creating the GTFS file format and convincing dozens of municipalities to use it, they basically did create an API. Except the transit organizations are running it and Google's using it to draw people into their products.
