Don't know about your first point on ML, but I think the second point is the more salient one. If Goodfellow was that productive and that much of a value add they would have found a way to keep him.

I think that is more about the disconnect between coding tests and the actual day to day work and skills required to do the job. Example: I could have a high level of competency in software engineering and also not care how a mouse gets out

I would bet it's using NLP (AI) and looking for lyric matches based on the captions. You could likely make a cover with an incorrect beat but the same lyrics and the AI would match to it.
