Isn't "Never carry your social security card in your wallet" standard advice? I was taught that since I was a child, before identity theft was even really a mainstream thing. As to credit cards, if your wallet is lost or stolen, you can qu

What is hard to understand about a school counselor? They are a point of contact for advice about which classes to take at what time, how to find internships & scholarships, what to put on a resume, etc. It seems like a straight forwar

Your post is self-contradictory and illogical. You say to forget about privacy, then acknowledge that some privacy is important, then suggest that privacy invasions don't matter as long as they happen to a lot of people. Most of us recogni

FTA: "Why wouldn't they be working to allow users to experience the entire Internet through a Facebook portal?" Is he suggesting that the future of Facebook is to become what AOL was in the 90s?

Family farms and small businesses are often severely hurt by estate taxes. Many of the people who oppose the estate tax are those who want to see a farm or business stay in the family, but tax laws make it incredibly hard to transfer it to

Very good information. I didn't do any verification from outside accounts, I just started immediately trying to stop/undo.

That's $52k per year, which is comfortably middle to upper-middle class in much of America. If that was in the Bay or NYC then it's low, but if it was in Omaha or Des Moines it's a good salary for an entry level dev.

Simply terrible advice. How many scammy pointy-haired-boss types haven't tried to use "we'll take care of you in the future" or "but the job is so exciting, you should be happy to work for half what you're worth" to justify low wages. Top

Historically, by the time inexperienced retail investors are hearing/thinking/talking about an investment, all the profit to be made is gone. When everyone was flipping houses every 6 months, that signaled the end of the housing bubble. Wh

One thought I haven't seen mentioned is the emotional aspect of several of these movies. In my opinion, Lost in Translation was bad, but I made it through it, I heart huckabees & Sideways were so terrible I stopped watching in the midd

Yes, how dare someone on the other side of the world do something that doesn't fit with contemporary American standards for what is professional! Clearly this is the fault of the technology industry, as a whole. Just like the energy indus

This reminds me of a philosophy class I had in college, where we discussed action vs inaction, and the responsibilities of each choice. I'll skip the lengthy description of all the views, but the short version is that there do exist very co

The article seems trivial compared to what I see as the real security risk - unrelated sites that have an "I forgot my password" option which relies on e-mail to reset the password. If an attacker has your gmail, they can go to your bank, y

Clarifying point - although coliveira's comment was as something of a true outsider, the original comment in the linked article was from a published phD student in theory who felt snubbed based on his response to "What school do you go to?"

False dichotomy. You don't have to say "we're not friends if you don't pay me back" but you can still want to be repaid. Who here hasn't loaned a friend a small sum of money? My friends and I are constantly in debts of 20 or 30 dollars t

I would think certain cases might have far higher click throughs in fact. For instance, if I'm searching for $FOOD near $LOCATION on my mobile phone, I would be incredibly likely to click an appropriate ad.

There is absolutely nothing interesting about a developer being female. Nothing. Quite frankly, it confuses and disappoints me that anyone would think that gender matters enough to call attention to it. We're not in the 1950s, let's stop

"The things you own, end up owning you" is the actual quote. I agree that there is a lot of truth to the notion. The more you own, the less mobile you are.
