I had a similar thought. A bride and groom upload a video resulting in 10 million views... and someone else who wrote a song a year ago makes money off of it. Clearly the copyright of the songwriter should be respected, but it seems to me

Resale value of luxury items seems very odd to me. If the original purpose of buying it was that it was intentionally luxurious and decadent, where is the market for buying it second hand? Obviously other people won't know you bought it us

I have to say, anything bad happening to De Beers is music to my ears. As you've mentioned they run a cartel to sell worthless rocks at huge markups to irrational consumers, but my real problem comes from the toll their actions take on hum

I agree that derogatory nicknames automatically lower the respectability of an argument. However, writing "loose" when meaning "lose" hurts credibility even more in my eyes. (I know this type of pedantic behavior isn't ideal, and I've neve

I spent some time looking at the issue today, and you may be right. I sketched out a very naive design which would be very simple but quickly grow to millions of rows, I suspect with a little research I may be able to solve it easier than

Thanks for the advice, you're almost certainly right. Also, I might use the line "Customers and money are the solution to most problems" as the mantra for my venture.

Worth noting - There's a related service at http://browsershots.org/ where you can see how a webpage renders in a number of different OS & browser configurations. It's been very handy for me to make sure my designed-in-linux pages st

How are people still so naive? When a teenager posts something they later regret to facebook, I can rationalize it as the folly of youth and not thinking about the consequences of their actions. But someone hired by Cisco, using a service

One key difference is that HN can be seen as "startup news" not "tech news". This is a much tighter niche, which reduces the appeal to certain demographics. It also means that if HN starts down a "slippery slope" that it starts from a poi

Seconded on all things real estate. This is more of a legal/social problem than a technical one at this point. Websites like zillow.com make a real estate agents role largely obsolete, yet they still try to command a huge commission on ev

Thanks for the input. I have some Python skills, so I just bought a Django book, I think that will be the fastest way for me to get something going. I haven't been this excited in a while. Not only do I need to learn a lot of new tech, I
