this is so good, i love it! some soft radial gradient roughly matching the sum would be pretty, but then the twilight edges are hard to distinguish…

one of my pet peeves of common computers is that they don't have a generalized LUT2 instruction. why do you pick out a handful of specific bitwise ops for me when all 16 are lying in reach! a mere 4 bit look up table! let ix = a

dedicating a single core to the task and interfacing with existing secure enclave / smart card like protocols would get you pretty far.

cool, can you use this to characterize gene expression networks? is it any better than existing state of the art?

I’ve been working on a toy bespoke computer, and eliminating accidental data dependencies like this has been joyful. Kind of embarassing that the V extension suffers this right now. Current deployment of older incompatible V specs is alread

That’s just the original discovery, I’m hoping someone would come in and look for more mathematical structure like the current efforts for topological insulators.

Has some high powered algebraist or topologist tried figuring out what is happening here mathematically? what structure is generated by all possible rotations that we are sampling here? multiplied by the many layers, what about nonuniform s

I walked to the gas station, drank an iced coffee, ate a sandwich while listening to a book and enjoying the forest. Wrote a README for a project I've been working on the past week. Then I noticed HN was down :(

The paper cites https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/8506644 , which enumerates 582 possible topologies for two transistors, and 56280 for three. I imagine most are useless and/or dangerous.

that sounds like a fun project! a suite of minimal m-mode code that implements your selection of “couldn’t bother to have hardware”. want to work on it with me? :)

Only the very smallest instances don’t get a full core. And when you have multiple vCPU the scheduler _won’t_ ever split you onto a thread. This is definitely true of aws’s nitro, I don’t know for certain about gcp. The attacks are not full

AWS and GCP vCPU are absolutely not shared, and any provider that’s still sharing cores or threads is leaving its users open to all manner of atrocious side channels.

Very wise, very obvious. The title isn’t the research finding. Surely the specific results are worth more than platitudes, engage the curiosity a bit.
