Try building any common OSS from source and you quickly realize there are a few libraries at the core of everything. MPFR being one, GMP, MPC and Zlib being the others that come to mind. In fact I believe MPFR depends on GMP.

Thoreau makes a similar comment in Walden: > … instead of studying how to make it worth men’s while to buy my baskets, I studied rather how to avoid the necessity of selling them. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/316

Unfortunately I picked something from my day job with a bunch of proprietary data. It was essentially a large list of pretty-printed objects with about 20 attributes each. A few of which had multi-paragraph string values.

Agreed, this is one the primary principles of the Unix Philosophy [1]. I was curious how performance would be impacted, and for a large file `grep` may not be so useless. $ du -h /tmp/file.json 161M /tmp/file

Somewhat tangential, but the author calls out using `grep` in conjunction with `awk`. Anytime I find myself doing this, it usually turns out that I can just throw the pattern into AWK itself. grep 'foo' file.txt | awk '

Yes, as oceans warm, more water vapor is being released into the atmosphere. Water vapor is far more effective than CO2 at trapping heat, and is therefore driving one of global warming’s most extreme positive feedback loops [1]. 1. https:&

Lot of comments here suggesting that lack of economic utility is to blame for the Amazon’s deforestation. While maybe true on an immediate basis, this overlooks the fact that 1/4 of all western medicines are derived from rainforest pla

Well the Amazon is often referred to as “the world's largest medicine cabinet”, so there’s that.

Nothing more than wood? There are likely billions, if not trillions, of dollars worth of undiscovered pharmaceuticals in the Amazon still today. Not that economic utility is needed to justify conservation, but nothing more than wood could n
