Isn't this just a marketing stunt? The article contains no engineering facts, just the branding thing. I mean: I expect the "new IE" to inherit code and practices from the "old IE". Unless I'm proven otherwise.

Did you consider seeing a psychiatrist outside the school? Depression is absolutely not specific to MIT students.

You've got a point there. However, not every modern tech-buzzed startup wins the market by rejecting privacy and playing the next Facebook. Consider Xiaomi, Uber or SpaceX good examples. Or in other words: social media is not everythin

This thread shows the big thing that is wrong with today's HN. There is a guy presenting a list of 49 arguments against using a service that is used by one billion people globally. Some of them are pretty good, some more sucky than the

Python uses reference counting to save on GC time. This is one of the reasons why it has GIL.

Yes, I know. This is a thought experiment, as there is really no such thing as perfectly synchronized clocks. Also despite the need for futuristic clocks the system lacks resistance to failure (no heartbeat from arbitrary node -> no tran

Given a set of perfectly synchronized distributed clocks you may not even have to wait the 66ms. Incoming transactions (both local and remote) go into the write-ahead log, their ordering is given by the timestamps (which are consistent, bec

LTE is a packet switching solution, so without traffic prioritization regular cellular voice calls could easily be trumped by a few heavy torrenters.

Could you elaborate more? I recently passed on a few US opportunities due to the H1B lottery thing and took a job in Europe instead.

There is a clever trick for that: a classic bash fork bomb will completely die once it gets impossible to spawn new processes. And an easy way to achieve this is to exhaust all PIDs, usually there are 32768 available. So starting enough `sl

Every test is in an artificial setting. That is the difference between a test and real life. And if you are not willing to spend a month on learning, then don't expect to be hireable.

I think you are rationalizing. These interviews are really not that difficult. Try going through "Cracking the coding interview", a month of practice should be enough.

It is hard to believe that anyone would want an electroconvulsive therapy based on an Internet advice. Even if, no doctor in his right mind will perform it just because the patient demands it.

A lot of "alternative medicine" is just not science, and simply does not work. Unless you consider being temporarily "cured" by your own endorphins as an instance of evidence based medicine.

Salary is about negotiation and leverage, not being born in a particular country, holding H1B status or having professional titles. This might have offended you, sorry for that, but it is just true.

And here we go again with H1Bs. Let me spare the discussion and give a numbered list of options to stick with - I propose everyone just writes his number in his comment. 1) H1Bs are both good and evil. We need reform. 2) US Government sucks

I'm a cyborg platypus, nice catch. Just two chromosomes is not enough to express all the variations of an algorithmic gender. And by the way, we also sometimes have Z's (but that's considered a racial thing, so no asking).

Breaking polynomially computable hashes is in NP, in the sense that its decision version - is there any word lexicographicaly smaller than w that hashes out to v - is in the NP class. Thus P=NP would give us a procedure to compute preimages

Isn't this just k-NN? I mean: one can reduce this problem to k-NN by first loading the database with all video frames, and then performing queries using frame 0, frame 1, etc. There are good tree algorithms[0] and implementations[1][2]

Algorithm is re-usable, i.e. you can count multiple events with the same algorithm. This way you get an array of bytes, or even half-bytes, instead of an array of very long integers. Can be useful, especially for embedded systems.
