Well, when it comes to firearms, incapacitation doesn't work quite like the movies show. You can't just hit someone in the arm/leg every time (aiming is harder than that), and even if you do it will fairly likely kill them an

I mean, you sound like a pretty typical hacker kid... which is to say, not a typical kid that people care about when discussing things like market share or teen trends.

There are a few good thriving subcultures out there, from what I can tell. My main interactions have been with burners (as in burning man) and makers. But some of my friends are also deep into anime, video games, hacking, SCA, and the subcu

I moved from the suburbs of OKC to California three years ago. I personally am extremely happy with this change, but I won't go into details here. What I do wonder: OKC has lots of issues with sprawl. How will this influx change things

This is probably a stretch, posting this on HN, but I'm looking for a Chemical Engineering or Bioengineering internship for next summer. It can have a coding component, but I'd like the primary job to be engineering. Location:

I'm not sure that I could be enticed to work outside of California, and the reason is because of the many friends I've made at university. Almost the majority of them stay in California and it would take far more than extra compen

I've been using Colemak for about 6 years now. The difference for me wasn't just speed, but rather that I learned to type "wrong" on Qwerty. I could never get myself to touch type, I always had to look at the keyboard. I

A potentially interesting easter egg: you might notice that in the picture of the calibration target, there is a small blur in the 0 of the "1.0". Inside this 0 are the greek letters "γδβγ".

I wonder how the center of economic activity would compare to other measures. For instance: - Center of all landmass - Center of all arable land - Center of population - Center of population weighted by income Especially if viewed over time

A phenomenon very similar to "induced demand" was observed in 1865, when increased efficiency in coal consumption lead to increased demand for coal. It's called Jevon's paradox: http://en.wikipedia.org/wi

If the studio had pre-emptively given copies of all its scripts in production to some third party authority, it could avoid the negotiations issue. I'd imagine it doesn't come up enough to warrant this, though.

Well, presumably since laser light is coherent, you only need to worry about the Earth's atmosphere. In this case, it seems that a 2.5 watt laser would be sufficient, assuming you can point it at Earth precisely and ignoring Mars'

Cool, but seems a bit hackish to me. Wouldn't the "proper" way to pitch shift involve taking a Fourier transform of the sound and simply shifting all the frequencies by some factor? Wouldn't this result in better quality

I think he means the tendencies which overtake us if we don't think deliberately about them, like procrastination. Procrastination is my worst instinct, and at times the biggest obstacle between myself and my goals.

A suggestion, assuming the author reads HN: One very basic game mechanic that is so far missing is strategies for collision detection. I would be quite interested to see interactive examples (and code examples) that do a good job of coverin

I'm a student (and researcher) at Caltech — and very excited to hear about this. I hope Caltech continues to push for open access. I know that many undergraduates would like to have course lectures posted freely online like MIT's
