One factor you've ignored is that to drive a car, you are required to carry insurance. Even if you modify your car, the insurance is still there to provide at least some relief to any loss of life and property you may cause.

You should optimize the common path, not the edge cases. Most of the time the user would be benefited (cached content = faster load) from using CDN. On the other hand, CDN being unreachable is not a very common scenario, so it is acceptable
