If we could get a "picture" of the CNB in all directions, it could give us hints to the structure of the Universe at two seconds after the big bang, just as the CMB gives us hints to the structure of the universe at 379,000 years

I wonder why the author says that Gamow made the great leap backwards, when Gamow was in fact developing a theory first proposed by Georges Lemaitre a decade earlier than what the author states for Gamow.

In extreme cases it does. You hear it pop up on the news every once in a while in the US. The IRS is the most feared government department in the US. I would say people fear it even more than they do the NSA.

It may seem really marginal, but any time you can save downloading assets on page load is money. Everyone should be using gzip already, but minification shaves off precious milliseconds on top of that.

It makes for nice, clickbait-y headlines, but if life spread through the galaxy like a plague, we would have found this plague in space, on the Moon, and on Mars by now.

When particles are created in the LHC, a huge number of particles are created when particles are collided. This is why physicists have to sift through mountains of data to find the one higgs boson in the flood of every other particle.

by xlm1717 11y ago
The way I've understood it is, particles are localized excitations of fields. You know of the Higgs boson. It is the excitation of the Higgs field, which exists through all space. Similarly, an electron is an excitation of the electron
