Stars aren't powered by gravitational energy - that would only give a lifetime 20 million years for the sun (Kelvin Helmholtz timescale). Fusion is what powers the sun.

Whether venues are double blind is extremely field dependent. In my field no journals are to my knowledge. However, many people use an initial rather than a first name, so it's difficult to assign gender unless you already know the per

It's very impressive. The Russians also fixed the insulation on their Proton rocket carrying Spektr-RG with some glue and launched a day later! They had to wait a month after the previous problem, however, which required a battery repl

I haven't done much special customization on the ThinkPad, other than updating the BIOS in Windows (it's dual boot) and changing the BIOS sleep setting. The sleep setting disables "Modern sleep", where the computer stays

Interesting on the battery lifetime. My ThinkPad Carbon X1 gen 6 can do 10-12 hrs in Ubuntu, though I had to switch the bios sleep mode to Linux. Maybe the lack of an Nvidia graphics card helps.

I use this a lot at work. I ssh into a server from my linux desktop and run things there, including GUI applications. Over a local network it works fine. It's much nicer to have local and remote applications displayed in the same way.

German banks also like their 5 character passwords! Fortunately you also need a per-transaction TAN code which makes this a bit better (though many people have this on paper or via an SMS, though perhaps paper is not that bad).

I had one of those answer a question boxes on my MoinMoin wiki. It was something like, "Enter an element which combines with oxygen to form CO2". The spammers worked their way round that pretty quickly. There must be humans who ar

In X-ray astronomy we often use Wolter Type 1 optics based on grazing incidence. These can be made with various techniques depending on the spatial accuracy (point spread function) required, e.g. foils for low accuracy or even stacked silic

Trains need a lot of infrastructure, meaning maintenance and construction costs (i.e. tracks and stations). Also, as they are slower, wage costs can be higher than planes.

SimpleSSHD is a simple ad-free open-source SSH server for your Android phone (available on Google Play). It's very useful. It only supports public-key based authentication, so you can't use a password, however.
