I completely understand the desire to not implement such things, but I also understand why they exist. Unfortunately, perhaps due to a mixture of elitism, protectionism, and market dominance, writing cross-platform software in any capacity,

In what way do you feel Nix doesn't achieve this? Because software can still ultimately rely on system state? I'd contend Nix is the best package management system yet, and while its certainly complex, much of that complexity only

Not at all, I just have WebGL disabled by default. I wasn't sure if the entire page was being rendered through it, that's all :)

Curious because your static landing page requires WebGL - what's your FE stack?

Their claim that let s1 = String::from("hello"); let s2 = s1; println!("{}, world!", s1); is in fact safe code would suggest they indeed don't have much concern for thread safety.

My concern with Pack obliging me to compress is that compression becomes less pluggable; I'd much rather my archive format be agnostic of compression, as with tar, so that I can trivially move to a better compression format when one in

With all due respect, I find it hard to believe the author stumbled upon a trivial method of improving tarballing performance by several orders of magnitude that nobody else had considered before. If I understand correctly, they're sug

I don't have any skin in this game, but I personally think "Your relatively long thoughtful reply is wrong; source: this paragraph a glorified Markov chain threw together" is really offensive. I would have zero interest in en

Most of these steps apply to installing an Android app from an Untrusted SourceTM for the first time. Half of these steps are fluff added for the sake of a clickable title. There are problems with Apple's proposal. This is not one of t

Strongly agree here. VS Code extensions with the audacity to download and execute random binaries are particularly pleasant on my NixOS system, where these binaries simply don't work.

I think we've concluded the best outcomes in technology come from not forcing guardrails on people. You should be able to ask an LLM to pretend to be Hitler, and if you don't like that - don't! >Maybe there's a midd

This was downvoted but I think it's true. I find it way easier to throw something together in a raster editor than e.g. Inkscape. I want to draw. With pixels. Not huge bezier curves.

I see Talos only supports XFS, what potential reasons could they have to prefer XFS to competitors? I've always struggled to compare filesystems fairly. My justification for ext4 is just that everybody else uses it :)

I'm almost the opposite. If I had to use Linux with GNOME, I'd just use macOS instead. The Linux desktop needs a shtick. Maybe when desktop cubes make a comeback we can make peace :)

You are right that there are software bugs that aren't memory bugs. Now as GP was saying, Rust inherently mitigates a great deal of generally serious software vulnerabilities, which is great, even if it doesn't mitigate anything e
