Every US Navy base is a toxic waste catastrophe, even the ones that have long been closed. Systemic problems in waste management on military base land stem from defense budgets that go to fun, sexy projects and toxic waste cleanup budgets t

Schneir talked about putting contraband on the blockchain. How many copies of youtube-dl and DeCSS and PlayStation 5 private keys and such need to get put onto the blockchain before the Music Industry tries to sue it out of existence?

Thanks for being willing to say this.

No, I don't think that can be done. No insult to the layman, whatsoever.

You bought a device and want every one else to make software for their devices to make your device work the way you want it to. I don't think that's the way the world is.

This kind of brash carrier disregard for consumer choice is a downstream effect of a net-neutrality-free-Ajit-Pai-FCC. Transparency by Apple (and Android, as applicable) to the consumer about what features carriers disable should be mandato

"The worst of both worlds." Sounds about right.

by xbar 5y ago
That sounds reasonable. In this case, if the author had updated the documentation sufficiently along with the change to make it clear what the new behavior was, that would have been fine? I agree that malware is unhostable. And in this case

I don't assume that at all. I assume that GitHub now lives in Microsoft-liability-fear mode. Expect them to police commits in popular projects.

What are the set of commits that GitHub should allow people to make to repos that they solely own?

I'm not exactly sure either. But my observations of politicians serving big business over small producers by dismantling anti-competitive regulations in several industries makes me think that it is almost a certainty. Accidents of poli

As electronics engineers and experts, many of us take issue with fraudulent claims in electronics. Audiophile-market electronics seem to show up as fraudulent more than many others. It has nothing to do with the audiophiles.

The author is having a human experience, but I do not find it relatable. I do appreciate her high-level comments on non-C++ languages as amusing and accurate complaints.

I do not think that's the point. Let's say you had a build that took 7 hours but if you took all the steps the author did, you would be able to build it in 30 minutes locally for debugging. Would that be interesting? That's a

I like this from Sciter's pitch: “golden 40 seconds” rule: for the user, to buy a product, it should not take more than 40 seconds from the click on “download” button to the UI to appear on screen.
