Funny given that Starlink itself has potential to be one giant synthetic aperture radar installation. From Casey Handmer’s excellent post ( https://caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/2021/11/17/science-upside... ): “St

Wow, from the post: "Together, the Record Layer and FoundationDB form the backbone of Apple's CloudKit. We wrote a paper describing how we built the Record Layer to run at massive scale and how CloudKit uses it." I think this

This is very cool! FoundationDB excites a lot of people because it's an extremely scalable and extremely reliable distributed database that supports ACID transactions, and which is both open-source and has Apple standing behind it. And

There is no correctness limitation on using FoundationDB in multiple datacenters, and if you do most of your writes in a single datacenter while using the others for disaster recovery, the latency is honestly pretty good too (especially w

Ah, sorry, that’s a good question. The good news is that FDB has a fairly opaque platform abstraction, and deterministic simulation tests for everything above it, so the vast majority of continuous testing in terms of CPU cycles can be run

The only license you need to accept to use this software is Apache 2, so I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea that there’s an Apple hardware restriction.

The only thing that's different in a distributed cluster is the implementations of steps 1 and 6. As voidmain said, the details of that are not trivial, ESPECIALLY the details of how it never produces wrong answers during fault conditi

It doesn't look like Apple open-sourced the Document Layer, which is a slight bummer. But I echo what Dave said below: what we got is incredible, let's not get greedy! Also TBH now that I don't have commercial reasons to push

A subset of the processes in a FoundationDB cluster have the job of maintaining coordination state (via disk Paxos). In any partition situation, if one of the partitions contains a majority of the coordinators then it will stay live, while

As an existence proof: before the acquisition we built an ANSI SQL database and a wire-compatible clone of the MongoDB API. I see no reason you wouldn't be able to implement Datastore. In fact here's a public source claiming that
