My mistake. I did only look up the population in Ireland, forgot that Northern Ireland was part of Ireland until the 1900's.

by ww520 2y ago
Another fun fact, the current population in Ireland is about 5.3 millions. That means there're more Irish in U.S. than in Ireland.

I spent some times in Ireland and Northern Ireland recently. What the locals told me about the famine were: - Most land were controlled by large land owners. Most peasants had very small farm land, which couldn't feed the people if no

Has anyone work on decoding over-the-air TV digital signal in software? I remember way back there were some cards that can decode OTA signals to be recorded into DVR.

This is excellent news. Private sector companies are going into space, landing on extraterrestrial bodies. Hope this spur more activities outward.

Like I said elsewhere, in most re-org downsizing, it's all a political game. All the departments are fighting to get the least cut. Engineers still think like engineers. Time to get political.

Then they need to gain enough political capital to stay on. In most re-org, downsizing, or budget cut, it's all a political game. If you don't want rich assholes to get the tax cut, get involved politically.

It's painful to see people doing real work get canned. It sounds like the unsustainable national debt has forced a cut across the board. Each department will find some organization to cut. The least politically connected groups will

This is pretty fun. I enjoyed it. Here's an issue. The mouse freezes a bit at 3rd level, leading to missing the ball. Not sure if it's GC issue or input handling.

Get NUC, or one of those refurbished Dell or HP mini PCs. They have plenty of CPU power, consume very little idle power, and friendly to Linux.

One thing I didn’t see mention is the utilization of airport lounges. It really helps to relax before boarding. Though in recent years lounges are getting overcrowded.

In a combination of heat, the POE cameras draw quite a bit of power, the video transcoding, and then the constant disk writes, all in a small slim case. It ran very hot during summer.

by ww520 2y ago
After couple failed hard disks in my old NVR, I’ve come to realize heat is the biggest enemy of hard disks. The NVR had to provide power to the POE cameras, ran video transcoding, and constantly writing to the disk. It generated a lot of he

It's similar to using Starlink in a cruise ship. The cruise companies hate it and prohibit it for good. They want you to buy their expensive wifi plans. Some people still sneak them in and run them on the balconies.

Just curious. Why can't the wrapper be an independent library outside of the DMA infrastructure? It can still be used by all rust drivers. I think Hellwig is against moving the wrapper into the DMA project that he's forced to ma

Have they did a bcrypt(password + userId + username), it won't be so bad. Order of entropy is important. Also I'm not sure what functionality the authentication cache provides, but their use of bcrypt(userId + username + password)
