Rust hasn't swept the world yet and it helps prevent real bugs and security issues. A better query language may make it fractionally easier to write database queries but you have to toss out a half-century of experience. It's no

I store my database structure in the repository either as scripts or as migration code (and sometimes both) I'm not sure what else you need. This seems like a basic tooling problem.

A different user could also get your browser cache, your cookies, and install all sorts of horrible programs running as Admin as well. This isn't really different.

Yes, this is what Raymond Chen calls being on the other side of the airtight hatchway. Once you're admin, you can do anything. You can install keyloggers, install remote access tools, etc. The only thing that Recall enables is that it

I've experienced both of these -- Good SDK that save you time over the raw API and bad SDK that steals your time. In fact, sometimes both are created by the same organization targeting different platforms! I don't think you have

Fundamentally the database is separate from the rest of the project. It's quite often a completely separate service hosted on a completely separate machine. Do you feel the same about HTML, CSS, JavaScript, REST APIs, etc?

Good means it gets the job done in a fairly logical and readable way. SQL queries are not giant programs and shouldn't be. I've written some very advanced queries with plenty of common table expressions, subselects, etc. Could

I kind of disagree; the problem with SQL is that fundamentally it's actually pretty good. So alternatives either tend to be too radical (throwing out the baby with the bathwater) or simply not enough of an improvement to gain any mome

Weird comment to make on a thread about exactly this kind of feature. They're a big organization with many people working on many different things. Some will maybe great while others will potentially suck.

Complex effects of mundane decisions become compelling stories of good and evil involving heros and villains. People don't really want to litigate these things in particular but use it as proxy for their own personal feelings about the

My applications have very few exception handlers and most don't do any "handling" at all except logging. My most robust application is a desktop application with a single exception handler at the event loop that merely prints

This is unrealistic example and has error handling completely backwards. The exception handler in main() only knows how to handle specific types of errors -- it doesn't know or care where they are thrown, that's not it's pro

You're just trading one type of control flow visibility for another. With even the most basic amount of error-return handling the actual control flow of your program is quite obscured.

People were saying that Juniper sounded like her (the current OpenAI voice)! Personally I think Sky and ScarJo are not the same human voice. They are perhasps the same "performance" as both ScarJo in Her and Sky are playing a fr

Did I explicitly deny this? By the same token, unless you are privy to the last 10 months of OpenAI's closed-door meeting notes you have no authority to assert it. But without those closed-door meeting notes, the evidence we do have

#1 is fine assuming such a crime was committed. But for as much as people assume this to be true, actually looking at the evidence it doesn't seem like it. OpenAI would have to be explicit in copying the likeness. Something may stil

I listen to Juniper all the time and I've listened to the clips of Sky and Scarlett Johansson (as "Her") side-by-side. It's pretty easy to be certain. > Whether the voice is exactly the same is largely irrelevant. I

ScarJo's voice is very distinct but it's clear from this thread that people can't recognize that. As soon as you play both clips right after each other it's obvious that Sky isn't an imitation of ScarJo's voic

If you listen to her voice in Her and listen to Sky back to back, they are clearly very different. Scarlett has some raspy tones to her voice that are very distinctive and come through even when she is talking like an AI. I wonder if peopl
