It's an issue of mental models. As a developer, his mental model is one of how naive software would sort items with mixed numbers in them. Most people, of course, naturally sort 10 after 9 -- their mental model doesn't contain s

It's not just the one decision though; there are literally thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of these decisions in most software. You want every single one of them to have an option? You want it to support every single combination?

Intel might have been successful with the transition if they didn't decide to go with such radically different and real-world untested architecture for Itanium.

I am sorry to hear what you and your wife are going through. Nothing I say here is meant to dismiss your experience. That said, I think it's important to separate personal experiences from what the larger body of evidence shows. Many v

It isn't hard to find that randomized controlled trials and large meta-analyses show that COVID vaccines are highly effective. No need to rely on media. You can point to one or two observational re-analyses that show otherwise but ov

> we get extremely hard to understand code The thing is code without operator overloading is also hard to understand because you might have this math thing (BigIntegers, Matrices) and you can't use standard notation.

Are too many people willingly accepting what is being given to them or do they actually have different needs that are almost entirely met by these products that they can't achieve easily with an entirely different ecosystem?

Overloaded operators are great. But overloaded operators that do something entirely different than their intended purpose is bad. So a + operator that does an add in your custom numeric data type is good. But using << for output is

I don't buy it. Software is not magically using less RAM because it was compiled for MacOS. The actual RAM use by the OS itself is relatively small for both operating systems.

I believe it's the `lock xadd` instruction. It's faster when combined with x86 Total Store Ordering mode that the Rosetta emulation runs under.

By prioritizing efficiency, Apple also prioritizes integration. The PC ecosystem prefers less integration (separate RAM, GPU, OS, etc) even at the cost of efficiency.
