I echo others here and encourage you to just delete your account and get off it. I did so with Facebook many years ago after getting sucked in to so many arguments and so much angst, and now, when I log in every year or so to check if an ol

Males aren't sexually selected for attractiveness. They are selected for their ability to provide for a mother and baby. So, human male's desirability increases with time, peaking at some point where their peak wealth crosses thei

Well, this takes me back. I’ve probably spent hours staring at the download queue in eDonkey then Overlord and eMule. I might spin this up just for old time’s sake.

Hey, no worries, rlgullis. I get heated too. :) I don’t know if it will be fruitful to continue this discussion here either, but I appreciate your comments and I suspect that if we spent an afternoon trying we’d find our common ground was v

Thanks for your reply, rlgullis. The extremes of my example were only to show that there could be real and serious consequences from misinformation rather than silence. If we dial it back from "killing my neighbour" to "lost

This is one of those posts that really hits me as a "maybe we can do this, but should we do this?" I suppose that if/when the ability to jack yourself in to a completely virtual environment comes, humanity will split between

Maybe it's a shame that nothing of consequence hinged on it. If someone was aggrieved, we're more likely to get a court case out of it and the law changed.

The world is complex and nuanced, and any "best possible world" will therefore be complex and nuanced. I did not advocate for the complete removal of all anonymity, which might have prevented important historical events. I advocat

Thanks for your reply. I think you're touching on a different issue as well: "Everything I say is knowable by everyone, forever." For most of human history the words and ideas that came out of most people's mouths were n

Your reply (and many others) assumed that I was advocating censorship, but I did not and I am not. All I am advocating is that whatever your idea is should be reflected on your reputation. I do find it interesting that there is such a stron

It is solvable by punishing anyone who posts fake pictures. Since the problem of bad actors in society has existed for millennia, we anyway know a dozen ways to deal with it. We just haven’t really bothered to apply any of them to the Inter

I used to think that the internet would be the greatest tool for human peace ever invented. But I was wrong. I didn’t know that humans don’t use reason to determine their position. The use it to justify their position and Google provides th

I think the architecture of “censorship resistance” must appeal to developers, which is why so many of these platforms exist. Unfortunately they’re solving the wrong problem. Censorship isn’t what make social media and blogging so toxic to

It's such a nuisance in choral music as well. There are about 1 million canticles, by hundreds of composers, to hundreds of settings, sung by hundreds of choirs, scattered across hundreds of albums. Good luck finding anything even slig

Many years ago I was a huge fan of Music Brainz. I found a mis-named album info one time, submitted a request with changes to correct them, was rejected out of hand for an innocuous reason, and never went back. Which is too bad. As an idea

Yet here we are. Our current trials and tribulations are nothing compared to the Black Plague, the Hundred Years‘ War, WW2, even the stress of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Yet here we are. Maybe it’s not so fragile after all?
