Lean Startup is really hard to apply to this kind of business. Even when he had them made 10k at a time, he was only able to eke out 75 cents of profit on each one. If he tried a smaller batch, the production costs would have eaten him aliv

In all seriousness, if you've already put in the effort to write a book, it's pretty hard to lose money selling it through a print-on-demand service. (It might be hard to make money, but it's pretty damn hard to lose money.)

I, too, would love to hear on this from Patrick or anyone else. NextDoor.com is using direct mail (I know because I got a postcard from them!) and I'm curious whether or not it's working.

It provides a point-and-click way to add repositories recommended by Canonical (including the paid stuff). If you're at the command line, you have to already know what repositories you want to add.

I would try it on an x86 device first, just to get your feet wet. There's enough ways to trip yourself up with LFS without trying to do it on unusual hardware.

This is the first time I've seen someone suggest split testing the ads that run on their own site. Are there any particular resources that you would recommend for this?

Scientific Linux really isn't a special-purpose distribution. It's just another Red Hat clone like CentOS. (Some people claim that it's actually a superior alternative to CentOS.)

I actually got an advertisement in my mail for Nextdoor. I followed the instructions and plugged in my zipcode on their website. It told me that nobody had organized a group for my neighborhood, and that I could either start one myself, or

It doesn't have the "batteries included" philosophy of languages like Python, where there's already a ready-to-use library for everything. If you want to do anything non-trivial with Lua, you'll probably have to touch some C code.

I expected the article to talk about getting to the surface without getting beat up by the rotor blades. I guess the rotor stops fairly soon after hitting the water, or else the downdraft would push you safely away?

A lot of the Iron Man franchise focuses on Stark as an action hero, with the engineering bit existing solely as a plot device. (In the movies, compare how much screen time he spends designing/building against how much screen time he spends

AFAIK a lot of it is due to issues as simple as Linux having more device drivers than Hurd.

Making the situation even more absurd, none of that money is actually going to the people who do the research. In fact, many scientific journals charge the researchers to publish their work, then turn around and charge anyone who wants to b

Does TFS beat out ClearCase on the Worst SCM Hierarchy? I'm just curious; I had to use ClearCase a lot at a previous job, and hated it but I've never used TFS.

Maybe they want something shot with the product falling in midair, or a model with a fan blowing his/her hair and clothing? Or it could be some appliance/machine that they want to capture in action (a popcorn popper would be a mundane examp

You are very right. I really meant "the parts of the camera minus the embedded system that drives the whole thing", but that wasn't very succinct. :-P The application I was thinking of was indie movie making, so I would want a decent resol

I've spent a bunch of time thinking about ways to do something like this on a budget. The general idea would be to have a bunch of bare camera sensors directly connected to commodity PCs (maybe with Arduinos interfacing between them) with e

The argument in the article seems to be that reduced government spending has depressed the economy, which in turn has killed its income from taxes. So, yes, they reduced spending, but they reduced their income at the same time, so there's n

I've abused it in the past when an application depended on a library that was not installed under the system path. I'd agree with the people who warn against using it when not absolutely necessary.

You would have to do it by screen scraping: Write a program that makes the HTTP request to search for the book in question, then parse the HTML response and determine what the result it.

IDEs like Eclipse have this problem solved for languages like Java, so it's doable. I don't know why I've never seen an equivalent solution for HTML/CSS.
