This isn't a "backdoor" inside the brain. (It's more equivalent to, say, gaining read access to /etc/shadow and being able to brute-force the passwords inside.) That quibble aside, this is an interesting article on a rather disturbing poten

Just browsing through the first Google hit for "one bedroom mountain view" got me this: http://www.apartments.com/California/Mountain-View/Avalon-at... One bedroom for "$1565-1725". I don't know if that apartment is actually available a

I'm curious, where are you having trouble finding one-room apartments for under $3000/month? Throughout the South Bay, I'm seeing prices between $1000 and $2000/month for one-bedroom apartments (not one-room apartments!). Even that gets a b

Very cool. I remember hearing that the disallowal of pointer aliasing was the main reason that it was possible for a Fortran compiler to produce code that could outperform code from a C compiler: It allows the compiler to perform a new clas

Will people please stop saying that in this context? Merchant-side fraud prevention schemes are not security. They are heuristics for reducing the number of bad transactions that the vendor has to handle. Algorithms should be air-tight. Y

The jpg format supports all kinds of textual metadata, so "write on the back of my photo" is theoretically a solved problem. I'm surprised to hear that there aren't mobile apps that make editing that metadata easy.

I have never been able to figure out how to cross-compile a project that uses CMake. GNU Make lets you just set some environment flags and drop in a different compiler.

I find the parallels between this and the recent HN outage to be interesting: Both times, the people responsible assumed that a recent software upgrade was the root cause, when the actual cause was something mundane and basically unrelated.

Well, the "branch-free" paradigm requires pushing a stack frame and making a jump to the passed function (requiring a pointer lookup) and a jump back to the calling function. In the branching paradigm, only one execution path requires a jum
