Not only that, but a lot of closed messaging platforms were originally built on XMPP.

I think they still support a cross-signed root, so hopefully those users will still be OK.

That's fair. Guess I just got excited about an opportunity to plug js_of_ocaml ;)

I'm not familiar with opalang, but I haven't noticed size issues with js_of_ocaml (though I've only used it for personal projects). It works by compiling OCaml bytecode to JS. I think the main thing you'd need to be care

It depends on what you mean by "safety". Yes, if you're running other people's code, you can't expect it to be entirely safe. However, you can mitigate the damage it can cause.

There's also js_of_ocaml if a good type system is desired.

One thing Standard ML has that the others don't is a full formal specification, in terms of typing rules and operational semantics.

I don't know if it would help them much. They want the camera pointed at themselves. I guess they could use them while looking in the mirror.

How about we just rephrase? We should stop making it illegal for people to do what they want to things they own.

Maybe they just wrote a simulator for physics, and what you’re noticing is just emergent behavior.

The alternative is to not check the model at all. Doesn’t really seem better.

I understand your point, but I don’t think there’s any value in including an extra layer of abstraction before you need it. Sometimes it’s clear that you need it from the start. But sometimes it’s not. And if you end up needing to support s

Sure, but if you’re never going to do any MIR-level optimizations, then there’s no reason to implement it. Similarly for graphics APIs. If at some point in the future you need to support a platform not supported by wgpu, you can add the abs

The thing about graphics in general is that typically you want to use whatever the underlying hardware gives you to get the best performance. This can conflict with the law of least power, but so what? You can’t optimize for everything, so

You would just assume it does. Really you want to detect all places that might allocate.

You can absolutely statically determine where allocations happen. You can't know for sure if all of those places are reachable in a running program, but that's not necessary to solve this problem.

Sure, but children now will have to deal with the internet when they become adults. "Protecting" them from it just means they're less likely to be prepared for it when they do become adults.

I believe what zozbot234 is saying is that Rust focuses on a specific subset of formal verification, and on trying to make a language with that enforces that subset in a way that is still somewhat ergonomic. I'm assuming "scalable
