I never heard the theory that they broke up because of the tax rates. Thought it had something to do with Yoko :-) Tax avoidance is a significant issue that will require some international coordination - but I do think it is a solvable prob

It's a double edge sword. Yes, Walmart helped to lower costs for the poor, but they also drove a lot of small businesses under and have fought hard to suppress wages and benefits. Overall, I'm not sure it is a net win.

A lot of those lavish benefits would inject money into to the system instead of sitting in an offshore account. That helps everyone. As Paul Krugman says, "your spending is my income", and visa-versa

Exactly. Warren Buffet has said an increased tax rate would not make him work any less hard. The desire to change the world is a more powerful motivator than money.

As an artist, you should be so lucky that people want to copy your art. It is the best way to ensure your relevance. Think of a band like U2 - probably the most copied "art" in the world. From memory, their last tour grossed over

True -the system does need reform. But certain companies behave much more badly than others. We should call them out on it.

Why is that ridiculous? If the Coke bottle has a superior shape, why not use that design? That is quite different than trademark . Consumers should be able to clearly understand if their beverage is a genuine Coke or a Pepsi. In this parti

Except for the part where Microsoft wants 100% of Corel's profits. Does that sound even remotely reasonable?

What is interesting to me is that industry has conditioned us to view copying as a bad thing. Is there any invention that did not benefit from copying ideas that came before it? We all stand on the shoulders of giants. We need more copying,

Just want to second this book recommendation. They cite examples of industries that have prospered without patent protection. Outside of pharma, the pro-patent position seems quite weak. And even for pharma there may be better models (lotte

If you have an interest in distributed computing "The End of Protocols" is a great read: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~keith/classes/ubicomplexity/pdfs/i... The whole RPC vs. REST thing is not a us

Sorry - the whole "REST is just like websites" thing drives me nuts. With the web, it is not the browser doing the navigation; It is very advanced AI wetware. It is hard to find widespread examples of machine to machine interactio

I use Slack often, and yes I know about the search feature. How do I find the answer to a question that was posted two months ago, for an open source project that is not paying to keep more than 10K messages? History vanishes with Slack. I

I see Google using Slack for things like the Dart and Kubernetes projects. I understand the ease of use aspect (Slack is quite nice) - but one thing that concerns me is that the discussion that happens is no longer (easily) searchable. Mail

I think the challenge is that markets in Africa are quite fluid. The car's don't get sold directly to ISIS - they get sold to a broker, who then sells them to another dealer, and so on..

I bought my wife a Surface Pro 3 last year. We debated very hard over the SP vs. a macbook. She does a lot of work with MS Office - so it seemed like a good choice. The bluetooth and wifi are now non functional (looks like a hardware issue)

I actually don't get the attraction of running Go on Android. I see it as a systems language. IMHO, Dart is a much more interesting applications language. And it will soon run on iOS (see http://flutter.io )
