It must be possible to manage a company in a sustainable way where constant influx of capital is not necessary. In fact the vast majority of companies must be run that way because they don’t have access to large amounts of capital, no?

The hypothetical here is a Joann’s that never went public, not a Joann’s that is already far down the “we exist to grow” strategy road.

Yeah! I am baffled that even one got through, but given that it did, why only one? And I would’ve immediately tried the “every protocol” version at that point…

If Joann’s doesn’t grow then why does it need your investment?

Republicans say that. But also, regarding pandemic voting provisions (vote-by-mail, same-day registration, early voting) proposed by Democrats in 2020: “The things they had in there were crazy. They had things, levels of voting that if yo

In the US, the NSA has always had both missions (protect our country’s data and expose every other country’s data). Since everyone uses the same technology nowadays, that’s a rather hard set of missions to reconcile, and sometimes it looks

> how can you “pull” E2E encryption without data loss You can’t. The article says if you don’t disable it (which you have to do yourself, they can’t do it for you, because it’s E2E), your iCloud account will be canceled.

The word “copy” in the early 1700s when copyright was codified in law meant both a written text and a reproduction of a written text. The meaning you’re using, of text at an intermediate stage of a publishing process, is much later, 19th ce

AFAIK, in the US it’s literally about copying. In fact, case law mostly supports the position that just the act of copying a program from disk into memory to run it is protected by copyright (with some statutory exceptions). (Google “RAM co

I’m trying to imagine how you would consider greater excellence in the field of pervasive surveillance of citizens as a measure of a “superior culture”.

This is about “stack”, the general purpose data structure, not “stack”, the place in memory you put local variables.

Same here. In my TypeScript code, Cursor/Claude seem quite fluent. In my Rust code, I often turn Cursor Tab off because it’s just suggesting nonsense.

So is iMessage. Putting some processing elsewhere on the network doesn’t change the fact that a conversation between spouses (or any other utterances of a person, for that matter) should be private.

Yes, thank goodness relative pitch is trainable, because that’s all you need, almost all the time. This new ability would let you come in on the right pitch for your first note, which is a cool trick. But after that, relative is fine. Ind

You are restating my original comment. Unless you think the normal security clearance system is “just ask the President what he thinks”. Actually, speaking of that one guy, there are very, very few convicted felons with documented mishandli

The difference in job duration isn’t the point I was making. The President is merely the head of three equal branches that are supposed to keep each other in check, and has significant limits on his/her powers. A CEO has essentially li

The United States isn’t supposed to have a “CEO” in the sense that a corporation does. For countries, that job description is called a “monarch”, and the Constitution is specifically designed to make sure we don’t have one.

Definitely, counting the ones you have is great data for justifying their existence, and can help identify places you should perhaps put a check farther upstream.

Oh absolutely, if you have the budget then do them all. I just meant “lower pri” than the other. My assumption is in most orgs you’ll find it hard to take time to investigate any of them, so you have to place your bets.

I don’t want to assign Safari to a space, I want each Safari window to stay where I put it. It makes no sense for Spaces to assume every window of an app is being used for the same task, especially a browser app.

When deciding whether to do an incident investigation for a near miss, one aspect to consider is whether it was caught by a safety system as designed, or caught by a lucky accident. The latter should be top of the priority list. E.g., Bad p

The topic is “we’re destroying software”, not “we’re destroying techniques to increase your compensation”. Individual compensation and collective quality are not somehow inherently correlated.

Will this, or anything else, make Safari restore its windows to the spaces they were in when it quit? Chrome does better but only succeeds part of the time. This is so annoying that I’ll consider switching to any browser that does it!
