I don't understand this obsession with tutors. If the kids have good teachers at a school with high standards, the only time for tutors is if the kids need remedial help. I'm speculating this focus on tutors comes from the belief

You are thinking about it backwards. It's not a matter of what was done for the kids, but what was expected of them. Parents would not tolerate low effort. Also, I didn't know any who employed private tutors, but they did arrange

Quality isn't the same everywhere. I'd heard often from my colleagues about inexpensive tailored clothes they got in Asia. So when I was working in Dubai, I went to a tailor to get some shirts made. They measured my arms and neck

The "dumb|lazy rich kid" stereotype is very old and no doubt has some basis, but in the few rich families I've known, the kids were pushed extremely hard to achieve academically.

Sports programs used to be a net income source, but I think that ended with Title IX, because schools became forced to spend on non-income-producing programs. However, athletic programs are still given tremendous emphasis by schools because

Absolutely, but it's hard to convince people of this. Elite schools (generally) provide better facilities and peer support, but the quality of teaching is usually better at non-elite (but not bottom-of-the-barrel) schools. Also, grade

Enjoyed the movie very much, but have issues with how Heptapod communication is portrayed. For one thing, they have two modes of language, purely verbal and purely written. Well, what do they do if they want to write down someone's spe

Something I've seen frequently in the business world is the husband and wife maintaining separate financial identities so that if one side's business goes bankrupt, a large chunk of the family wealth will be protected.

In the USA, your SSN is supposed to be kept confidential, almost like a PIN for an account. When you think about it, that's an absurdly bad system. It's like if it was a security risk to let people know your real name.

The Ben Rich book is good, but the one I was thinking of, which covers technical details of stealth technology, is Peter Westwick (2020) Stealth: The Secret Contest to Invent Invisible Aircraft . It is really very good.

The story on the color is actually simpler. They had put a lot of effort into designing a camouflage pattern for it and there was still some debate over the final design. The project manager from the Pentagon heard about it and said, "

The issue is being able to choose your degree of involvement. I know people who like to attend church but won't if their only choice is a small one, because of the social demands made of them in a small group.
