I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the differences between using SWIM vs a commercial product like FlightAware. From my cursory glance at SWIM, it seems like it's probably better for getting flight plans and weather inf

I was curious as to how this was done, so I took a look at the external JS that CodePen was configured to load. He's using GreenSock[1], which looks like a really cool tool for building rich interactions and animations with SVG+JS in t

I think it's essentially half of what Echo does. Echo has to do two separate tasks [1]: The first is to figure out exactly what direction your voice is coming from. Once it has a direction, uses beamforming [2] to get a higher SNR for

I've never gotten a better drum overhead sound than with a spaced pair of 414's (I think TL II, but it's been awhile). Love that mic. That said, I don't think the 414 color is the same as the U87 color. My impression has

I've found that the engineers who build products on open source software very rarely have the authority to donate company money, and the businesspeople that do have the authority rarely understand the benefits of it. I think a guide on

I think the remote wake is based on when the car is put into reverse, which would be challenging to tell from the phone. I imagine that only running the camera when the car is in reverse is a key part of keeping power consumption down in th

If you're IDE doesn't do it, then I highly recommend using ack[1]. It's my go-to tool for tasks like this, and I've found it a joy to use. 1: http://beyondgrep.com

My understanding was that FaceTime and iMessage weren't open sourced because of issues related to a patent troll (VirnetX IIRC). I'd be interested in hearing from others that are more familiar with the situation.

Yep - it's pretty common in the pro audio industry to use DB-25 cables for 8 channels of balanced audio (+, -, gnd per channel). They'll break out to 8x XLR or 8x TRS (1/4" headphone plug) connectors. It's used way

Abusing WebRTC can be a viable option in latency-critical applications, but it brings a bunch of other concerns with it (browser support, no way to leverage a CDN, etc).

I think this would be really useful to UX researchers! The folks I know in that space often set up screen-sharing sessions with users, and watch them interact with the UI in real time. Adding gaze tracking to this process seems like a natur

Yep! I've only ever driven manual transmission cars, and my dad taught me that early on. "Just leave it in first and idle along." Even in a very driver-friendly manual car, stop and go traffic can be brutal.

Thanks for jumping in! Sounds like it's really nice for urban small-cell deployments, campus networks, etc. Do you experience a lot of issues with keeping links aligned at those tiny beamwidths?

I would love to hear more about that - have any links? From a quick google, all I can dig up makes it sound like it's normal circular polarization, which is used quite often in satellite. Not sure why it wouldn't make it into terr

It's interesting to see the huge channel bandwidths they're using to attain this. Advances like this are largely driven by higher sample rate ADCs and DACs becoming more viable in recent years. Edit for clarity: channel bandwidths

That makes sense - since port numbers are unsigned integers, you can just use a bitwise AND rather than a more costly MOD. I haven't actually looked at the internals of the hash, so I'm just assuming it's simply BUCKET = DPOR

That would actually be pretty cool, but the data would have to be redistributed across the new set of buckets when the parameter was changed. That could get really messy...

I think it depends on the network - some have names (like the Internet, ARPANet, DoD's NIPRNet, etc) and some don't (like the global POTS network). Saying "we talked on the phone" is more like saying "we talked on t
