I think it's really a question of audience. A textual DSL for visual layout is popular to the HN audience, because most of us are more comfortable writing code and interacting with computers on the command line. While we love having a

Quite true. It's also not uncommon to end up with harmonics of mains hum (at 120 Hz), which is more noticeable to human hearing than 60 Hz.

In my experience, ECC shows benefits more often when a DIMM starts to fail, not in protecting us from cosmic rays (though I don't think I was able to make a note of the last cosmic ray that flew by me). I've had systems limp along

This is really timely... I just got my new MBP today, so I've been installing all of my standard tools. Luckily I saw this before I used Homebrew to install htop!

Ack, my bad. I meant OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). Same should probably work on any Linux distro with standard build tools installed. I keep a ~/local directory with built-from-source programs in it. That way I don't get any conflicts

I hit the same thing, so I figured I would try compiling from source. I built ncurses 6.0 from source (installed to $HOME/local) and then htop 2.0 (also to $HOME/local) and it worked a charm. This was on a clean (took it out of th

Orbital slots apply mostly to geostationary spacecraft, which this is not. It is far too low for geo orbit. I'm not sure how LEO is regulated, but very few commercial spacecraft would be affected by this bird. The only commercial craft

As a JMU alum, I it was both interesting and burdensome to see the other side of the 'Burg that I was sheltered from when at school. Myself and most of my classmates were aware of the duality of Harrisonburg's culture, but to see

The locations are most likely calculated using orbit information published by NORAD and/or the spacecraft operators. This is called ephemeris data, and is usually published in a format called "two-line element," or TLE. A TLE

I really like this - I think it would be an awesome way for people in cities to leave ephemeral easter eggs with chalk on a brick wall, for instance. Just because a lot of folks don't see the business value or purely technical use does

Just to summarize, from what I've read this affects only Apache installations (possibly only Apache + mod_php). I just stood up a WordPress site on Sunday running on nginx + HHVM (FastCGI), and it's not experiencing any issues.

There are some really interesting mastering techniques that are needed because of this, too - for instance, bass content (< 200ish Hz) on vinyl usually gets summed to mono to prevent a loud bass note on one of the stereo channels from ma

I would expect to see the frequency response of the speaker + mic combination show up as darker and lighter horizontal bands in the image (since these spectrograms are plotted with frequency on the y axis). It might look really cool! Edit:
