This is an excellent overview of optical networking - one that I wish I had found years ago. As transceivers are getting cheaper, more and more industries are finding use for optical systems. Having a basic understanding of how these system

I mostly agree on this, but I can also see how they got to a design that has this flaw. You can do better (more transparent, more adaptive, etc.) limiting in DSP than with a simple hardware circuit. Doing the limiting in the driver also sav

I think the argument is that the iPhone set the trend for what all phones looked and felt like (large, touchscreen-based devices that can run third party applications). Saying that the iPhone is a small minority of phones is similar to sayi

Often times corrosion on battery terminals, or loose connections to the bulb, can cause a flashlight to not turn on when you hit the button. In this case, hitting it into the palm of your hand a few times usually solves the problem, and the

A great example of this technique being used stylistically is Titanium by David Guetta (ft. Sia) - listen for the kick drum masking out all of the other instruments in the mix at the end of the chorus. In this case, it's used more as a

White noise is defined as having equal energy per frequency; that is, a 10hz wide slice of spectrum centered on 100hz will have as much energy in it as a 10hz wide slice of spectrum centered on 1khz. Pink noise has equal energy per octave;

Agreed, which is my main complaint: the older (non-retina) MBP was better at sustained CPU usage (at least in my experience - this is 100% anecdotal and non-scientific). Apple used to produce a machine that was suited for the things I do, b

I've been really impressed with Richmond, VA. The tech scene is small, but pretty healthy. It's not my favorite weather, but it has four seasons, which is a plus. Great restaurants (some DC restaurant concepts get tested there fir
