Technically speaking, even AOL kept growing into the late 2000s. It didn't stop mailing out CDs till 2006. IIRC its userbase didn't max out until well after "still being on AOL" had turned into a meme.

I think a large fraction of the active userbase will be happy to pay, eventually. The catch is that the userbase will be so small by then it won't be enough to pay the bills. It might yet survive as a personal PR machine, though.

Some parts of AOL are still around, so I suppose the ongoing Xitter exodus will slow down at some point. Things like local government outreach and Myspace-like démodé bands might take years.

Here in SF, there's an online permit database accessible from the property lot database [1]. A new or prospective owner can check for permits for past additions. I don't know how far back it goes, but I'm pretty sure it'

Another inexpensive option (depending on location) is a factory-built house. These can be built in warehouses in "slices" narrow enough to fit on a trailer. Some of them are also on the designer side, e.g. https://www.p

The 1920 all-included price would not have been tripled. Consider that the median US house price in 1940 was $2938, or $66K in current dollars.

All of these are true, but they only cover about $100/sqft (see my sibling message.) Production efficiency and technology have also improved for a lot of stuff, bringing prices down at the same time that they were going up. When people

That house looks to be around 2000 sqft, i.e. about $25/sqft in current dollars. There are three effects at play, roughly: $25 => $50 due to stricter codes and higher scarcity of some materials $50 => $100 due to higher wages eve

Let me rephrase. Let's say you're writing textbooks instead of code. You need Ivy League PhD's to write grad school textbooks, but not grammar school ones. Here are two crappy scenarios I was thinking about: - You choose to w

I've experienced this. It'd be nice to hear from the counter example here, the 10x developers in meritocratic nests. Mostly so we know where they are.

Just spitballing of course, but if there was a 0-day at the USB stack level, there are many possible reasons why it wouldn't be mentioned here.

Today's CO2 bill is only a very narrow and short-sighted part of the picture. Cutting out fossil fuels needs to happen first, in order for renewable and EV tech to have a chance to improve. Then there's the urgent priority of depr

As far as false dichotomies go, "Tesla or BYD" is about as bad as it gets. On the whole, the world is a little worse off if you buy either. Might as well buy a gasoline car then. If you're on the fence, consider giving the ot

I completely agree with everything you wrote, with one small exception: Venezuela was destabilized by Putin's goon Maduro. Per-capita GDP has dropped 3/4-fold [1]. This accomplished two things: - Reduce world oil production, boost
