It's not 100% compatible with existing applications. IIRC Alpine Linux tried to switch and reverted back to openssl twice.

compiler autovectorization is poor, people often outperform it when writing SIMD code. intrinsics are so low level they might as well be assembly.

zstd has a long range mode, which lets it find redundancies a gigabyte away. Try --long and --long=31 for very long range mode. zstd has delta / patch mode, which creates a file that stores the "patch" to create a new file f

128bit SIMD on x86 is called SSE, not AVX. AVX is 256bit. SSE (first introduced with the Pentium 3) had many extensions that added instructions: SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2 and some others.

You guess the MAC tag value of the message and measure how long it takes the server to return "bad MAC" error or behave in a way that means the MAC was bad. In 1/256 cases, it takes longer because the first byte was correct.

The system was built with the assumption that you're going to have SREs, lots of them, with experience babysitting the systems, to keep them working. SREs were cheaper than building a system that can handle lots of unexpected things wi

`static` variables are file-scoped, similar to module-scoped in other languages. Truly global variables are accessible from any file. Those should be very rare.

Right, but it kinda depends on what you mean by "portable". Only an interpreter will work without modification on a new host arch, but code for a JIT that is organized in such a way that makes it easy to add support for new host a

Unless you have to use deflate/zlib/gzip/zip for compatibility or you're very constrained in amount of memory, you should always prefer zstd over deflate - it's always both faster and compresses better, so there is

This is an uncompressed block. For database records or log lines, you should use dictionary trained on likely data. Then short records compress well. See what facebook does with zstd (they employ its author): https://engineering.
