"the borders of the U.S. and Canada aren't really all that similar to the borders of countries like the Netherlands or Spain" They used to be.

Not really. The US-Canada border was far easier to cross pre-911. You didn't even need a passport to cross up until 2004.

If HAML is an unforgivable sin I want to be a sinner. Btw, HAML eliminates a class of errors (improper tag nesting) and I find it much easier to read. To each his own, but I don't get why such an opinion piece is front page on HN. Is this t

Actually the non-english speakers are split evenly between french speakers, and speakers of other languages. The discussion was about diversity (and the imagined lack thereof in Canada), not about IQ ...

I guess it depends on what you consider 'diverse'. You seem to only consider skin colour. Besides, Canada is more like 80% 'white' vs 72% in the US. An interesting tidbit you may not know is that less then 60% of Canadians speak English as

That's certainly the argument he makes. Unfortunately it's not a good one. If anything it could mean the end of in-memory key/value stores (ie: memcached)

But it can (and should be) fixed. It's not that difficult. Choose a convention (ie: always $haystack before $needle), find the methods that don't conform, and print deprecation messages for them, add their replacements. Then in the next maj

Are taxes lower in the suburbs of most American cities? I thought they'd be higher due to lower densities (more roads, sewer pipes, etc per capita to maintain). At least that's the case here in the Greater Toronto area ...

There are huge differences between the two. China has far, far better infrastructure for starters, and the amount of absolute poverty is far lower in China.

That is largely not the case with your neighbors to the north. In Canada only 1/3 of taxes are collected at the federal level, and some of that money is distributed to the provinces to spend (poorer provinces get a larger proportion of paym

Macports is a decent enough package manager. My only real gripe is the lack of binary packages.

No, in fact there's a good chance that the Parti Quebecois will win the next provincial election. Separatism still has mass support in Quebec.

Argument kinda falls flat. For starters, Xcode 3 is still free, at least for now. No need for Xcode 4. Also, I'm certain that someone will package gcc for mac sooner or later now that there's an incentive to do so. There has not been much i

For my sites IE is no longer the 'dominant browser', it's market share has fallen to ~35%, down from >50% a year ago. Of that 35%, only half is IE8 with IE 6 & 7 making up the other half. If trends continue, IE9 might constitute 1

They could not come out against it before the ruling was made. They are the gov't, and the CRTC is an arms length agency. It's not the government's place to interfere with an arms length agency, at least before they've announced a decision.

I just checked Learnhub's numbers ( http://learnhub.com ) and IE is now at 40%, it was 54% a year ago. Most of the traffic comes from India. Chrome went from 7.5% to 20% in the same time frame.
