Do you really have to pay yourself "reasonable" compensation? I don't doubt that you were told that, but it is interesting that multiple CEOs of large, public companies (e.g. Brin/Schmidt/Page at Google, Jobs at Apple) pay themselves $1 per

Also, I'd add that designing an app to scale out effectively is one of the harder challenges that most developers face in the world of web apps. He seems to imply that you just by another few boxes and magic happens, which is not the case f

I had a similar situation a few months ago. My goals were to get something up and running relatively quickly but it was my first python web app and I wanted to make sure that I actually understood what was going on underneath the covers. I

I think that his lesson number 2 ("No separation between the technology organization and the product organization") is an interesting one, and to my mind very wrong. The goal seems right -- making sure that the product is built with the cus

This reminds me of something I always wonder about: the importance of management in startups (once they hit, say, 8 employees). For the most part, if you hire the right people they are self-motivated and in general the team has a clear dire

Most large tech companies have an explicit prohibition on non-lawyers doing patent searches. At all. Doing the patent search won't get you sued, but if you are sued and they win, the fact that you did the search means that they can hit y
