I think a great way to learn programming is to start with the simplest languages. Start with Scheme. It doesn't even have proper objects and classes, so you'll be forced (guided, actually, if you go the SICP route) to implement them yoursel

In Java, I would use FreeMarker as template language for all sorts of things, including i18n, rather than the typical sprintf-like syntax, because FM templates can contain arbitrary complex code, but the simple template cases work too.

To me, strongly typed means something entirely different: a strongly typed language does not allow you to do unsafe conversions. In C for instance, you can cast any integer value to a pointer, creating references to things that may not even

Yes, absolutely. My typing efficiency (compared to a good keyboard) on a touch screen is like 20% at most. We may see alternatives to the current 'static' keyboards though: displays on the keys (I know...), malleable form, flatter, whatever

I like your attitude regarding this. I feel very much the same way about my own projects. A wave going from "this is awesome, I can't wait to finish it" to "oh my, this is way too ambitious, I'll be dead before it's ever complete" and back.

Just because that's the case for illnesses (and brushing your teeth?) doesn't necessarily mean it's true for your hair.

I actually worked for ARM, but not on their main architecture. I worked for a satelite office acquired a few years earlier, which was spun out again last year. The project was a dynamically retargettable compiler for DSPs.

Except he doesn't write it. It's output from a program. Compilers don't emit readable output either. I'm not saying I'm against clean HTML. But the argument you give is probably invalid.

Exactly. I like how you threw binding in there too; I use schema languages (such as XSD) for binding at least as much as for validation. Maybe it's because I program in a statically typed language, but I really apprecicate the value of sche

One of the issues the whole setter/getter convention creates is that, for instance, I'm now reluctant to write a setter method that does more than just set the field value [1], because some other programmer or some tool might expect that
