Don't forget all the mass surveillance and control that "we nerds" made possible. The picture of the last 20 years is not rosy. Computer technology has advanced a lot, sure, but when I read things from the 70's it seems that there was a mor

Have you tried deleting your cache? The simplest explanation for this behavior is that the old redirect was cached. It could be something more insidious as well, of course, but that would be... evil.

libclang could help a lot here, as it gives access to the internals of a C/C++ compiler all the way from tokenizing to code generation. It also has built-in support for all kinds of IDE features such as code completion and fixit hints.

That's not entirely a fair comparison as Excel contains a complete VB environment.

Maybe that cheat was only in the PC version? I wonder how the PC version (which I've played and fondly remember) and Apple 2 version differ.

What would you use for string handling, then? Please don't tell me you prefer strcpy/strcat and zero-terminated strings?

Who ever thought of this? I can understand "don't use == for strings", or implicit conversion when one of the arguments is a number, but this is extremely sneaky as it will only behave this way with two numerically-looking strings. Ouch. Wh

Once Google indexes Borges' Library of Babel, though, you will find that any sentence is already used, and every article is already written. On a more serious note: it would be interesting to add a check to CMS systems to automatically look

It seems that overall, "race balance" is harder to define than "gender balance" because the gender balance is about 50% in every country, whereas the race balance can vary wildly. That doesn't make it less important or valid of course. Race

I don't understand his jump from "search is unpleasant and implies loss" to "search is dead". Cleaning bathrooms is also unpleasant, but to say companies specializing in it are dead? I don't think we ever globally solved the lost car keys a

It probably does feel different. To him. Please don't blame people for their feelings or force them to over-analyze or rationalize them. We're all human. It would be different if he was writing a scientific paper on the subject, of course.

It really looks like the functionality that my Dropship hack offered :-) Except that it's easier to trace, as the person sharing the file has to give explicit permission, instead of just giving some anonymous description of the file. I gues

Very interesting. So one could infer the workings of the universe on a deeper level than quantum mechanics by studying how much information needs to be stored with a certain statistical representation. Can we un-editorialize the title thoug

Neat! Would be nice if it had a color bar (legend) to see which color is which value, though. The red/green/blue used below the graph for the axes ranges looks like one, and that is a bit confusing.

Malthus may still some day be proven right. It's a common fallacy to think that because something hasn't happened yet is a reassurance that it will never happen. Don't forget there are a lot of people that have little or no food at all (acc

Many systems suffer from similar fate (think Emacs) That happens so much in software there needs to be a word for it, a term of its own. After a while, you get deep enough in the rabbit hole so that it seems your initial judgement of redu

When I read this I wasn't sure whether this was really meant (those steps sound awful, especially if you have to do it over and over) or a parody/sarcastic. Poe's law is getting to me.

I'm sick of Android's permissions system. As you can't reject individual permissions it suffers from permission creep. In their first versions, applications tended to request only permissions they really need. Then every update they request

This sounds both useful and futuristic. However, I think it's more like a new field of research than something you could realize in a startup. We're not even close yet.

Interesting thought. I wonder, though, what makes those places separate from the universe ? The universe including those other places, metaphysical and scientific, would be even bigger and more mind-boggling.

Is it right to equate functional programming and determinism though? Functional programming implies a certain programming style / type of language, whose output is guaranteed to be deterministic if only pure functions are used. But they're
