Thin never works for me because I need a case anyway so I don't break it, so the added thickness takes away all the effort that went into making the phone thin. I'd really like a slightly thicker phone that doesn't need a cas

Last year, I was driving through the mountains, behind a motorcycle that sounded so good I had constant goosebumps from it. The sound of it echoing between the mountains, slowing down, accelerating for like 30 minutes was such a special exp

There are many things in OSTEP that I found really eye opening. One thing that stuck with me was that at some point, when discussing virtualization, it referred to an OS as a virtual machine, and that really changed the way I look at operat

Whenever I read "yeah no", it reminds me of HN comments from people disagreeing with someone. I have no idea when "no yeah" would be used though.

I'm from the Netherlands, and moved to Quebec (French part of Canada) 16 years ago, to be with my (now) wife, and even after all those years, I still feel I can't express myself as well in French as in my native language. This, I

Being in the Netherlands makes this very challenging indeed. I am from the Netherlands but don't live there anymore. I came to visit family in December a couple of years ago instead of the usual summer trip and I had forgotten how incr

One of my favorites is Fabien's own "Game Engine Black Book: Wolfenstein 3D". He does a really good job at explaining how id Software managed to create a first person shooter for the 386, including code samples in C how very

This is really amazing, thanks for sharing! How did you know which pins to look at? And do you know what the other pins do? I’m super curious now, and actually have an original gameboy which I now want to open up :-) I wonder if these same

I guess the battery acts more like a buffer for the solar panel, and battery life here literally means “the lifetime of the battery”.

This created a wonderful image in my head. Thanks for that. I take famously long shits too, and this would be a deal breaker for me. I guess a smart toilet would solve this. Wouldn’t even need to be that smart: “someone’s there: keep the li

Yeah! A DX2 66Mhz, with a real mechanical hard drive, in a real beige case with a turbo button :D Some modern "amenities" I have are the gotek, and a CF Card to IDE adapter, so I can more easily copy files to it. I use it mostly f

Gotek are awesome. I use one in an old 486 and it works really well as a floppy drive replacement. Especially with the FlashFloppy firmware replacement.

Something I’ve always found interesting is wording in 1st person vs 2nd person. For example a link to “your orders” vs “my orders”. They’re both legit, but feel totally different. And I guess there’s a third, neutral option: just “orders”.

I just had an idea: how about a car that makes you stop by the side of the road to watch 2 minutes of ads before being able to continue. And for a certain amount you can unlock adless travel.

I still use my SE (first gen) which is the same form factor. I love this phone, and I regret the day it’ll be so far behind the latest supported iOS that I have to stop using it.

Would be interesting to see a similar article on car design through the years. I’ve always wondered what happened in somewhat recent years where many cars were made to look like they had an angry monster face. I haven’t looked into it much

Reminds me of the days when working in an office was still a thing, and I sent a coworker next to me a joke on Slack, and they replied LOL but their IRL facial expression didn't even show anything close to a smile.

One day I’ll buy a real 16C. But they’re just a little too expensive to easily justify buying. I know there are remakes but there’s just something about the real thing.

I’ve understood monads multiple times in my life, but each time that understanding was so fragile that it crumbled when I tried explaining to someone else. I’m currently in a phase where I don’t understand them.

I actually went through this yesterday! I opened a new (still in plastic!) box of HD “floppies” to make a bootable disk for my 486. I sent a picture of it to a friend and he replied “how big are these? 512k?”. I too thought it was common kn

When my first kid was born, I planned to start preserving my navel fur to be able to knit him a sweater for his 18th birthday. I regret that I never got around to that. He’s 15 now and I don’t think 3 years will yield enough for a sweater.
