You would feel right at home in the way Dutch (and other Germanic languages) name W with just one syllable. V is "vay", W is "way". Except the W (in Dutch at least) sounds closer to a V, just less fricative. Same mouth s

I live in a French speaking part of Canada but am originally from the Netherlands. My name starts with a W (Willem). In Dutch W sounds a lot like a V, just a bit less fricative. When someone asks me how my name is pronounced, and hears me s

I wonder what percentage of pixels is actually from the camera's sensor vs made up / somewhat inspired by the data from the sensor. Maybe I'm too old for this, but I can't imagine people wanting their photos to look like

Yeah ok good point. I think my thinking around this was too simplistic.

The way I see it is that a clearly AI generated article is the result of some prompts. So the "author" wrote tens of words, which then got inflated to hundreds and maybe thousands by a computer program. This is a very inefficient

I think we tend to forget that many things can be implemented without "smart" features / wifi access / apps. Ie my 20 year old oven has a "start time" feature. It just uses the built in clock.

You're right that today's cars are safer, but the Volvo 240 does have crumple zones. It was considered the safest car of its time actually

I was replying to j_m_b's comment, not the article. But you're right, the article doesn't sound like they vibe coded it.

My wife's Ioniq 5 was hit on the bumper while it was parked. Took weeks for all parts to get to the dealer and cost thousands of dollars because sensors etc. if someone hit my 1981 Volvo 240 the same way I'm not even sure it would

Maybe I'm out of touch with the times, but I wouldn't feel safe riding an e-scooter with custom vibe coded firmware.

My daughter took a 4 hour train home. She brought money for food. But apparently you can no longer buy food without a bank card on Canadian trains.

I wonder if the convenience of a smart phone makes social awkwardness worse. As in: I'm already not very socially comfortable but my phone makes it that I never get any practice either.

I've always found it impressive that such a small diameter brake can brake so strong. Especially considering it's filled with grease.

A little while ago I bought a 386 laptop. It pretty much had everything wrong with it. Spent weeks repairing it. Best $40 I ever spent.

I believe you. I'm just telling my own personal experience. What works for you doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? But also: I'm purely doing things for my own pleasure now, so whatever I enjoy

I got out of tech about 5 years ago, before AI really took off. I still do a lot of personal projects and now never use AI. I tried it a bit (only free plans) but noticed how much it caused me to no longer be able to think through a solutio

I used to adjust exposure a lot on phones like the iPhone 5s, so I would, for example, get the highlights exposed properly and have the rest be nice and dark. Can't do that anymore, or not as well at least, because my modern phone will

When I come home in my car, sometimes my daughter's phone (who's already at home) will connect to my car, and her music will stop in her headphones, and I get K-Pop. What a time to be alive.

I have been wearing my Casio F91W for so long I can't even remember buying it, and I'm not even a power user of this watch (never use the alarm or stop watch). I wouldn't even know what to do with a smart watch. I'm sure
