Good ol' Yodlee MoneyCenter is pretty decent at tracking net worth. https://moneycenter.yodlee.com . I don't log in much nowadays, but I remember it is pretty easy to add asset values and get them figured into net worth

As far as I know, this was a project that wasn't expected to get this big — more about learning Derby for the developer. And then it got big :) tl;dr: No big reason. He likely agrees with you.
