In my (German) university in the 00s we weren't handed back the graded papers, but there was an office hours slot where you could visit and take a look at yours (under supervision I guess). I don't think I did that even once.

OK, does anyone actually remember if half of the systems of the 80s really had such perfect font rendering or is this just some emulation 'current version'? The first computers I used were 486 with DOS and early Pentiums with Wind

I'm not sure deliberately avoiding this is useful, I do agree it makes sense to not only have friends at work - but just like everywhere else it can work.

I don't want to be too generalizing, but I found the book to be matching a lot of American cultural stereotypes (as I have experienced them) and most of it would just seem corny (but not terrible) to most people from European countries

Not sure I understand, but maybe check out https://github.com/tmfink/i3-wk-switch for i3/sway, maybe it does what you want (as I understood it)

that's the beauty of xmonad-style switching without being pinned down per workspace or monitor. i.e. if i have virtual desktops 1-2-3 on my 3 screens in order, I can switch out 2 for 4, but 1 and 3 stay put, so 1-4-3. if I want 1 to be

I still have an ATX Midi case sitting here in my office, bought in 1998, spray painted with the same Ford Metallic blue colour that my Fiesta had, a couple years later, because I only needed the can to fix a couple small scratches and had s

It sounds like you think this is a bad thing. The tab switching is one of the main things that annoy me on a mac, and I'd describe myself as a linux tiling window person first, windows user only second. Also my mac usage is hopefully o

Less ex-user, more like: never really managed to get to use it at work I guess (just like it is for me). It is still a niche language (compared to the big ones) after all.

I mean at least you have teams as an alternative. Where my wife works they simply have a WhatsApp group because there _is_ no messenger, and while they don't use it for work stuff, they couldn't even have anything but group emails

People have different tastes and opinions, and I don't remember how GNOME looked in 1998, but KDE 1? 2? wasn't so great imho (saying that as a huge fan of plasma, and intermittent KDE user for the last 25y). I used enlightenment f

I guess the definition of "overpriced" varies, but I pay 7 or 8 EUR for one bottle of CO2 and it lasts like 3-4 weeks for 2 people, just to put it into perspective.

Unless I am mistaken or had some other fluke it will also just happily download the old version and build with that, even if there was a vulnerability, which has mostly led me to always bumping to the latest release when I touch it. Someone

I hated this (so far) for any microblog-related things where I tried it. That was mostly many years ago with Twitter. To me this can work when you go all in on web standards and get the replies collected at the source, I guess with the fedi

Wondering what specific field of CS you're referring to, I'm seeing a much wider spread (and Saarbrücken does not even ring a bell). I was attending LMU and I have not kept up with the database stuff the last years from there but

That's only true for some things. If you provide a course on, say, Assembler and CPU architecture, you better have examples ready that are newer than Knuth's books. Your approach would be kinda ok if your program said: we'll

This comment section has made it clear to me (and maybe others that use some of these tools every 10 years) that just finding the correct project/binary if you want to use TeX can be... interesting :) https://www.tug.org

It's never that easy to calculate. I have a long stretch of road near me that used to be 50 km/h and is now 30 km/h. If you take that road during rush hour, yes - there's no meaningful difference in time spent. You'

I don't know, I also only use RSS (with the exception of Reddit I think) so I would not even notice a website that a) provides content I want to get notified about and not actively visit for a reason and b) has no feed.

That reminds me about some irc channel around 25 years ago where we had this odd guy running IRIX and occasionally sending us screenshots. Most people were on Windows, some of us were running Linux, but IRIX seemed odd even to us, with our
