How about we don't blame the people, especially with the state of certain countries' healthcare systems.

You must be really lucky then :) My experience from ~2006 to 2014/15 (on and off, different companies, many different servers) was mostly bad, literal "you get what you pay for", with disks in dedicated servers dying left and

My takeaway was more that the author expected a ton of things to not work, while in reality only a few didn't.

I don't think that's a good analogy. Most of us called "OS X" for two decades. Apple might have changed the official name to macOS (or whatever) but no one I know really followed suit.

As a non-mac user I originally didn't even know the beachball was indicating "waiting" and not actually "it crashed". Just from my coworkers grumbling.

Some good ideas and horrible execution. First of all the UI wasn't great, then you were forced to use your (back then) "real-name" Google account, and no third party clients. Maybe it was different for people who live and bre

My World of Warcraft account had been secured by 2FA 10y earlier than my bank account. The good thing is, the launcher app on _my_ PC got the feature (a few years ago) that I only need to use the actual 2FA fob once every few months, not ev

That's only for the nano ones which I personally have never used. My large USB A Yubikey is in my pocket, with my keys. So unless someone is mugging me or also stealing my pants, nope.

I think the problem is that teachers' salary is from the "school funding" budget. Here in Germany it's different per state, but in my state (at least when I was in school) - ALL the teachers of ALL public schools were pa

If the password manager injected anything else than a "paste password" button, for example anything that is a different product by the password manager authors... yes, same thing.

I think the only cashiers I see standing in Germany are at IKEA and hardware stores (because they have to stand to scan half the huge parts), and even then I think they have a chair inside their little spot next to the scanner and the conve

One slightly different approach I've seen at some more old school industry customer: A bug with a semi-doable workaround is usually not urgent. This is less a problem with a more continuous deployment, but if your release cycles are me

I don't use any of the scintilla-based editors for serious developments, but as lightweight text editors. I don't even want those two use cases to have the same history for files opened. In fact Notepad++ on Windows is my eterna

I remember using SciTE in the early 00s. Apart from some oddities of displaying italic text in a weird way it was a perfectly cromulent editor and you could start it, do your task, and close it before eclipse had even finished the loading s

Yes, but also no. I'm not a huge car person but it seems they automakers are diversifying their lineup quite a bit. Look at BMW in the 90s, there was basically the 3,5,7 series (plus a few outliers, then the Z4) but now they have troub

No idea where they got that data but I call bullshit. Most people I know are still on DSL which means 20mbit upstream is the usual maximum (sometimes 40), so not sure where this even amount of fibre users would live.

That's usually not a problem though. The software can look at $XDG_WHATEVER/tool/config first and ~/.toolrc second. Everyone who wants the clutter can keep using that.

I'm close to 40 now and I'm not using 8pt pixel fonts anymore. But the advice to use 16px normal text fonts was probably written by someone on a mac or other hi-dpi display. On Windows and Linux without 4k I find it horrible. So y

Hm, I have much more difficulty imagining how far inside the shoreline that would go - so if I take a port city, is it wiped off completely? Does it matter if it goes uphill for 10km? 100km?

Never thought about it this way, but my bicycle commute has always been 30-45 minutes and that's why I'm leaning 60-70% towards "I don't miss it". If it was only 20mins door to door I guess that would be different.

I guess I was simply too young (and not motivated enough), but QuakeC was kinda impenetrable for me and my online research didn't really yield a lot of good resources. So I guess you're right, and a friend's older brother and
