We have a binding system that maps keys to "actions". The idea is that they will eventually be read from a conf file, so you can remap keys.

Cheers. Rich repr has become essential in my workflow as well. It's one of those small quality of life things that makes for one less thing to think about.

Works over SSH, low requirements, and cross platform are some good reasons. Ultimately though, I would like Textual to simply be the easiest way of creating a useful UI. Something that you could quickly become productive in with just Python

Gracias. Hope you continue to enjoy my stuff. Hope you check out the Textual code. I've tried to make it as readable as possible.

Cheers. The boxes use this technique, which I think I may have invented, because I've never see it used elsewhere. https://www.willmcgugan.com/blog/tech/post/ceo-just-wants-to... For smooth scrolling, se

It's possible. In application mode you don't rely on the terminal's select capability.

Textual is a project I started in 2021 to build a TUI framework on top of Rich. I did a Show HN back in August 21: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28106389 At the time, it was purely a hobby project, but a lot has ha

It’s not a “performance” issue, it’s a protocol issue. One which is largely solved with the synchronisation protocol. Workarounds are needed for older emulators.

Win32API was designed to render a GUI from day 1. The terminal protocol pre-dates Windows and wasn't designed with modern hardware in mind. It's not that it is slow per se.

We have a gallery of apps in https://www.textualize.io/textual/gallery I'm surprised how much has been done with it. The version in master has been stuck in limbo while we've been working on the CSS branch.

These issues are precisely why Textual uses Truecolor by default. It is supported on the vast majority of terminals. Colors are reduced to 256 (actually 240 because we avoid the ANSI colors) on terminals without truecolor support. 16.7 mill

Yup, it's a subset of CSS of course. But you will be right at home if you know CSS. We support multiple layers, but we are explicitly not advocating windows that can be dragged around. It wouldn't be hard to build, but I feel TUIs

Textual supports both keyboard and mouse control. But we are aiming for a keyboard-first interface, which I feel is a better fit for terminals.

You’re looking at the master branch. Most of the work is in the CSS branch. The xterm control sequences are well documented ( https://www.x.org/docs/xterm/ctlseqs.pdf ) and we’re using a very minimal subset. The onl

Textual will be keyboard focused with mouse support to aid discoverability. I agree it’s not a TUI if you can’t do everything with the keyboard, so I wanted to avoid things like floating windows or interactions that are impossible without t

We’re working on improving the accessibility story for TUIs. Since we’re targeting the web we can add screen reader support.

It will run just on just about any terminal on any OS. Only standard xterm escapes are used. You might find a really old terminal emulator where it struggles, but it would be the exception and not the rule.

That’s right. I would usually reach for Typer for CLIs. I chose Click because I wanted to extend the —-help and I wasn’t certain If Typer exposed the internals.

You can add —force-terminal to avoid stripping ANSI codes. But you’re right, a built in pager would be nice.
