Can we agree that you speak from an idealistic, not realistic, point of view? https://twitter.com/kittystryker/status/388925083559141376

Commenters: you need some terms defined with context. Let's do that. I'm a founder and one of the current maintainers of the distributed/federated microblogging platform rstat.us. In this particular context, centralized vs di

I guess you cancel out my intuition with your random opposing statement and we are left with me with a ton of links to studies and you with absolutely nothing.

> Female devs are considered a novelty and the term female dev is considered to be frustrating due to the term dev being appended by 'female'. The amount of active segregation is indeed frustrating. > Why can't it simply be accepted

I disagree that this type of article is merely an attempt to introduce negative engagement. Highlighting the problem so that we have this discussion is always important. You may "let it go," as you say. That's fine. However, why do you expe

It's her chosen name. When you can choose a name, you do so based upon a tradeoff between comfort and identity. Women on the internet can't always afford both, and so choosing such a name seems powerful. It certainly is never hypocritical.

If you are truly interested in it... I'll just dump some things here. :) "Female sexuality is framed as something which exists for the pleasure of men" is a true statement in general media. So. [Most] Porn. Watch it. Who's orgasm is display

That's totally a valid point. I wish more men would speak out against this and, honestly, that it is not used to diminish the equally valid point of sexism in technology. But we have to understand that in those situations it is not oppressi

Yes. Mainstream porn is very sexist. Do you know what a woman is assumed to be? bisexual. Do you know what happens when you look up bisexual porn? You find a man. Think about that. Understand what that means and who the assumed audience is.

Think about how little time you and I have to devote to these issues. And then think about how we don't have to suffer them. And yet, women and your non-white-male must spend some of their time (that time we may spend coding, or reading, et

Hmm. Then to go with your double-standard argument, am I not supposed to support your plight because men keep watching emotionless action movies or something? I don't get it.

Free speech is granted to ensure that oppression can be beaten by language, not to permit people to use language to systemically oppress.

Your anecdote is very useful; thank you for writing it! I really appreciate your input. In general, your writing has been greatly appreciated. Without observation, we wouldn't seek facts and we wouldn't use the scientific method. In the end

There is always one of these replies in every discussion on this topic, isn't there? Some guy comes in and tries to define 'sexism' for the rest of us with a greatly simplified version and then gives us an anecdote about how some nice guy (

The client api and the backend that implements the protocol are different. I mean, you simply need html to provide a means of building a client. But, no client will really do that. rstat.us will try to support existing apis, but that's not

As another mentioned, email has this issue. Email (smtp) is a federated system, much like http. Basically, we can all have our own clients, servers, and live on our own, but still interact as a whole. Just like ostatus powered websites. It

You need a domain to get information about a person, such as where their server is. That domain does not have to be the server they use for microblogging or whathaveyou. It shouldn't be, honestly. You can host your identity anywhere and poi

I think a second dimension on this discussion would be fascinating. "How old are you AND how old do you feel?" Although I'm not sure how to word that just right. For instance, capturing situations like: Are you a 65 year old grandfather tha
