The split between content and design is false. It just is. Typographers sometimes need to rewrite copy (or request one) to fit. Photos need to be cropped or scaled, or new ones chosen. Some kinds of writing or art really demand a specif

Most "content" sucks. Most designs are a kind of content in themselves... and suck. That's why we have these awesome design fads.

Is there any political movement trying to convert H1Bs into green cards? Expanding temporary guest workers harms local workers, by creating a two-class workforce. Giving them green cards, while still causing a decline in wages, at least

According to the law, they are to be paid the prevailing wage. That is a slippery definition, because I think it means the median wage, but in some situations it means the highest wage. Either way, the point is not to depress local wages.

There are some parents who will not say "no", and there are some children who will holler until they get their way. The advertisers know this, and will take advantage of it. Different families deal with demand and desire for products diff

The other thing is weight. A bag of chips is 3 or 4 oz. A case of them is a few pounds. A similar sized box of vegetables is 15 or 20 pounds. The chips will last a few weeks. Vegetables will last a few days.

I never thought of SQL as declarative or like Prolog. I think it's more like a filter-writing language, with set functions like join. Agreed that the distance between Lisp and SQL is a lot shorter so an RDMBS doesn't gain you very much. I

What about the animosity of the local developers who want to make $60k a year plus bennies, but you're hiring people for $15 an hour?

That's not how laundering works. MtGox is tracking all the transactions, and will work with the police. There are laundering services that will take your money, then send it to a recipient in dribs and drabs over time. They basically say

I tried second life a couple times, and just didn't get into it. Either it was totally boring, or way too kinky. Often, both. I designed a couple objects. It was exciting at first, but got tedious, and I lost interest. The idea of maki

How well do those projects go? I've had bids rejected for being too high, even when other developers failed to deliver due to underbidding. Some people never learn.

Rentacoder had open bidding, which led to bidding wars, which led to failed projects. So they moved to sealed bidding (by the workers) to prevent price wars. Open pricing may drive out all but the most aggressive talent.

This is so true. Look at Hmong educational stats and they look like the stats for low-income African Americans. And look at where African Americans in the cities came from back around 70 years ago: from farming communities in the South. T

Teachers get paid OK and have a lot of job security compared to the average workers. I think they deserve it, for the most part, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking they are paupers or working class. It's a solid middle class job w

It is unfair, but it would be better to focus on how to lift more people up to the level of teacher retirements than to bring teachers down. Trying to lift all boats strengthens and enlarges the middle class.
