I'm not familiar with Twitter, but would it be possible to have the site say something like: "You're following X, Y, and Z, who are also following me; you should too." I don't really like the tone I wrote, but you get the idea.

How long would it take the lawyer to make his case? All rsync.net needs is to skip one day and it's too late. If rsync.net can stall a bit or find a way to fight it, then it's over.

What is the size of the SSD? If it's a desktop-sized (60GB+) SSD, then I don't think it applies; the author's argument is that it won't fit on the tiny netbook SSDs. Obviously, within a little while that will be wrong as well.

How many non-X Linux distributions fit his description? "For use as a desktop PC operating system, all the various “Linux distributions” are basically the same thing: variations of Gnome or KDE sitting atop the ancient X Window System." It

Disturbingly high percentage of spam/agenda-based targets for these flames. Am I missing something? Is this abuse, or is the signal-to-noise just that bad?

Seems like it would be better for their self-esteem if they could rationalize the firing as being by crappy VCs who don't know what they're doing. This way, it's much harder to blame it on the VCs.

His point is not only that web apps are inferior. His point is that web apps are not good enough. Case in point: TechCrunch goes on to report: "Don’t worry about those desktop apps you think you need. Office? Meh. You’ve got Zoho and Goo

Improved medical knowledge and technology? Better access to hospitals and doctors? Lots of things have changed in the past century. It's just as well to say that lifespans have gone up and heart disease has declined with the spread of telep

Mostly unrelated, but I find this disgusting, along with some of the other fractal visualizations I've seen. I don't really have a reason for it; it's just a visceral reaction that makes me cringe. All the little parts and the strange shape

To me, it seems like they are shying away from being focused on him. Their coverage of his time away and return was as minimal as possible. They probably don't want to look weak if Jobs has to leave due to further health problems.

This isn't a fireside chat; it's a report on a report of a talk he gave. Here's the original: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2009/07/listening_to_m... I'm surprised Ive mentioned Jobs, since Apple doesn't want to associate themselv

I think the purpose is as much to create a discussion of [Free]DOS and its uses as it is to let everyone know about FreeDOS's anniversary. Besides, there may be people who aren't aware of this particular OS. Many things on HN aren't newswor

I don't understand why this post has been so heavily downvoted. It presents an honest opinion with no malicious intent. Are we going to attack people fo simply not being aware of every hacker group?

Stop serving images? Obviously creating a text-only template is best, like another poster said, but the images are going to be the biggest drain. Simplifying your layout could help if you are under huge strain, but not as much as removing i

What do you mean by "prefer?" It seems like people say that Bing is better in certain design criteria, but they still use Google. They use Google's design because it seems more familiar. That sounds to me like people prefer Google's design.
