I'm a computer science student and none of your WTFs are WTFs to me. 1) the numbers don't matter much, they're just what they used to rank. they don't have any implicit meaning. Texas A&M is a decent CS program so no

I completely disagree with your sentiment and think that academia should focus on novel work rather than incremental improvements. Something novel may not be better than the existing techniques right now, but what's to say they won

Please don't make such a blanket statement. Donations do indeed fund scientific research directly. When a faculty member is hired, they get a "startup fund" to get through their first few years before they have grants, most o

I want to add something a lot of people don't know. When you have cable+internet, you end up paying about 20% taxes+fees on the final price. Some of that is government taxes, some are misc fees, but it's a lot more than your state

Even better if there was a short menu prompt telling you the price if you want to connect, to give you the option to decline.

I thought the issue of back pay was already resolved (back pay was approved in congress): http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57606174/government-shut...

They'll be paid back when the government is no longer shut down. So if you have savings, it's essentially a forced paid vacation.

I feel like this particular story is over the line. It's a sob story that's misleading--the USDA didn't say anything about the garden, instead it's the property management that forbid the gardening on their landscaping,

I used location history a lot, and I am now looking into other gps logging apps because they removed API access to history. The export you can do is only KML and doesn't have information like accuracy for each coordinate, leading to a

Where do you see the policy that professors take a sabbatical every three years? I've looked at the Harvard faculty web pages for several of their departments and they all say a most once every seven years after tenure.

Search engines have to solve this problem, that the results listed higher garner more clicks, and thus using clicks to rank is biased. They can separate the position of the result from its relevance through something called a click model. T

The massages were not free. They were $80/hour plus tip. Or you could sometimes find 2-hour user studies to participate in that would give you a massage coupon, but it still required a $20 tip.

Thank you for saying this. For years I have been slightly ashamed to be browsing at 150%. I occasionally get comments like "what's wrong with your CSS" when my friends are showing me their websites on my computer.

Typical "unlimited" data plans are $30/month. Considering that I use my data freely, and I never use 200mb, I wouldn't benefit from an increase in limit. But you're right that £5 is a little less than $10.
