If I'm reading his post correctly, it took Gabriel Weinberg 4 months to raise his round, and he still called it quick and painless: http://www.gabrielweinberg.com/blog/2011/10/what-i-learned-f...

Someone please say something intelligent but not begrudging about the fact that only having to spend 27 days raising $1.1 million is such an abnormally short time frame that while interesting the "lessons learned" will probably not be trans

Despite my warnings, I think freemium can be a brilliant marketing tactic even when it isn't sustainable. Whether or not it's dishonest depends on factors that are partially in the founders control and partially not. When Stormpulse did t

Very interesting. I think soft limits could be a great way to go, particularly in situations where the users needs can change (increase) at a moment's notice and their getting value out of the service means not hitting a roadblock that req

Bells & Whistles isn't a bad starting place (as my post says, it's the default) and it can create conversions (even the majority), but it can also be a mixed bag of candy with an ROI that's hard to establish because it's simply a buck

According to most of the freemium gurus, freemium and free trial are not the same thing; the former is defined as having a level of service that is free forever. Obviously free trials are by definition not free forever.

You should be able to differentiate yourself from those projects by focusing on something full-time and adding your unique expertise to the mix. You are a unique human being, after all. If you can't, you shouldn't bother. I created Stormp

I have no reason to doubt your talent, but I have an aversion to the "I could do it myself" argument. What does that even mean? You could do it yourself if you had a year to work on it? 10 years? A lot of software contains code icebergs

I've had 5 Apple laptops since 2001 and have never had to replace anything. Average time of ownership has only been 2 years, though. Because of the resale value, I've found it's pretty effective to sell the 2-year old and put it towards a

I'm surprised with the amount of Apple love in startup-land, more startups don't attempt to emulate their pricing strategy. Instead, we are A/B testing our way to local maxima with products that are supposedly changing the world.
