Fascinating to hear about Travis. Allegedly he could drive a car! But there's speculation that the Xanax he was given that day might have been the cause of the attack. I also wonder if he was getting a proper diet.

It has the advantage of using normal syntax rather than string literals (AST manipulation, formatting, static analysis, autocomplete, ...).

Sometimes people have to use things that are non-standard so that they can become standard. Besides, converting to and from standard regexes shouldn't be hard. Yes there are disadvantages to using a non-standard third party library but

Why wasn't this done months ago? Seriously, is there any good reason?

I'm pretty sure people would have understood that requiring a positive test before entry is not just theater.

I thought managers only care about how many years of experience you have and the presence of certain technology keywords, so how hard is it to write an adequate resume?

You're saying applicants have to revise their skill sets but I don't think brushing up on algorithms is a very big change.

You'd probably remember a snippet if you made it. If not, there's autocomplete.

Sure there's a lot of memorization in medical school but I'm more interested in computer science, the context of the article.

Thanks for providing these details. For your Python example I'd just use a snippet. On the other hand, Google's pretty fast and always updated. It's all a personal trade-off I guess. I wouldn't say it's common for m

Indeed. I see the value of Anki for rote memorization, e.g. studying for a fact-based exam. But for more reasoning-based domains I'm skeptical.

Why not just ask the candidate if they're willing to do a probationary period rather than deciding for them?

I don't get it. Obviously assessing candidates by only looking at their GitHub is a bad idea. But if a candidate does have a good GitHub, that's useful information.

So industry, but not agriculture, screwed up people's faces - a puzzle. Pollution? Watery processed e.g. canned foods (as mentioned in the article)? Preservative methods that replaced older foods like hardtack and tough salted meat?

Indeed, quite sad. This risk aversion, or maybe inability to weigh benefits against costs, is the stagnation Thiel is always talking about.

Actually they were already collecting data and people easily set up outdoor sensors all the time. But maybe there'd be more incentive to collect within a smart city project.
