There's something to be said about user confidence and a user's confidence level directly correlating to their productivity using your app. I could not have thought of a worse example than removing a progress indicator from sending an email

Used to be a TextMate lover, bought the license at least 3 times. Then I met http://www.jetbrains.com/webstorm/ - never touched TextMate again, and don't ever plan to. Just thought I'd share for those who have not tried a JetBrains IDE

Actually that's a good point. I'd like to change my stance to it would be nice to have this language feature, but there are current workarounds that are decent.

Best API ever for a payments processor - period. It literally takes a couple hours to set up begin collecting payments. If I could buy some shares right now I would. I've convinced 2 people to use it and both are in love. This startup i

pretty much but I find it quite readable and maintainable. The execution flow is very clear though if you look at the comments in my gist.

I wrote a library (30 loc) to handle sequence and parallel flows. Using only that, I rarely go over 80 character column limit that I impose on myself. There is absolutely zero callback spaghetti whether it's 2 or 25 functions deep in the c

It's got nothing to do with being viral. Viral is when it asks you to enter your email address + password and invite your friends from a list. If something happens to you in a social network, you get an email about it. It's a must for any

I was able to save the girl. You can reset the rocks by exiting the cave. Where did you get the music? How long did it take to get this demo going?

as if node.js didn't make it trivial enough, it's built on top of socket.io, which now handles the concept of channels for you :P Bi-directional message passing in real-time is a solved problem and I am not sure how many companies are willi

Just to be clear, by "failed to work at scale" you are specifically referring to the asynchronous I/O codebases being difficult to manage, correct?

It's a matter of best practices. In particular how it's done in this code, where it's outside the definition of the plugin and binding events. Plugins should be built in a way where it is explicitly invoked by the programmers using them, an

I don't mind that it's trivial if it saves me from doing some tedious stuff, but after reading the code it's unusable the way it's written right now. Some of the things that need to change are: 1) DOM selectors must be defined by user, not

It's doing what normally Erlang would have been used for, which answers the original question. It's a node.js deployment, and very early version one at that. I'm not really sure what your point is.

Sharing the utility libraries are a huge win though and should not be underestimated. For example on one project alone: - Input Validation - Asynchronous loop patterns - Promise pattern implementations - markup logic & output - A* path

FWIW I've had the exact same experience as the author for (I kid you not) a Visual Design opening. Now unless we somehow had the same recruiter, I doubt this is a "one-time" incident.

On that note, why bother writing Ruby, just have CoffeeScript full-stack with CS compiling to Ruby. That way developers don't need to deal with 2 languages.

I'm not sure what you are replying to as it's been redacted, but just wanted to say that there's really nothing wrong with that technique. Developers tend to way overestimate the cost of a long polling request with minimal headers. Also th
