Layer 2s such as Bitcoin's lightning network do not use a public ledger for their transactions. The only thing public is the transaction that opens a payment channel, everything after that happens as peer to peer messaging across the n

Somewhat off topic but I only recently learned that that monkeys and ladder experiment never happened, it's just a thought experiment or story to illustrate the point. But the closest real experiments were not nearly as dramatic and di

Absolutely! The real complexity comes from conflict resolution. If someone edits the top, and someone else edits the bottom, which version do you go with? What if they're editing the same area? Entire companies exist to provide elegant

Whether it's RAF or CSS, this would only reliably work on a 120hz display (or anything else higher than 80hz and divisible by 40.)

With regards to the OPs note about headlights being too bright: Has anyone adjusted their headlight angles? I noticed oncoming traffic has occasionally been flashing their brights at me, and I suspect they think I left my brights on and are

To the OP: It looks like your `button`s have no `color` property, and are just relying on the user agent stylesheet to (hopefully) be a dark text color. This will vary for different users.

At least in the US, it's very common. The iPhone has ~60% market share here, skewed even higher if you limit to higher income individuals. Text messaging is still the lingua franca of communication here, likely due to the lack of a sin

Christian Rudder (main author of the blog) wrote his own book Dataclysm. It's separate from the blog though, that was called OkTrends and you can find the articles on archive.org.

I would kill for a major manufacturer to make an e-ink phone that isn't hard to acquire and run. The Hisense A9[1] looks just about perfect, but the difficulty of getting Google services to run on it puts me off. [1]: https:/

Looks great! Not sure if this is a Tailwind thing or not, but I think any presence of hex codes in your examples is a little disappointing. It should be trivial to adjust colors from a fixed palette, rather than find-replacing hex codes acr

I always push back on this argument, because it came up a lot. As someone higher up at the company once put it, if people are sufficiently convinced that you can find them what they're looking for in a dating app, there's almost n

I worked at OkCupid from 2013-2017 and totally resonate with the author that mid-2010s OkCupid was a really special product, and that it took a steep decline as the decade went on. It's not entirely fair to say that the Match acquisiti

I am very anti WEI but I can still have sympathy for anyone who is doxxed or has death threats sent to them. It's a bad proposal and it should be argued on its merits and resisted in its implementation. But even in HN threads I saw com

Any proper gate for a user to access content should be managed by a server, not on the client side. It would have to be the same for WEI. If they can detect that I'm using an adblocker, there's no reason they couldn't prevent

I run an ad blocker on all of my devices (mix of uBlock or Brave browser) and I'm pretty surprised how infrequently sites ask me to disable it to access content. Not sure if your experience is different.

I think this is a little reductive. WEI is likely what some people at Google felt was best for AdSense's customers, i.e. advertisers. It just so happens that Google has a whole other set of customers who this is not best for, e.g. Chro

I'm not sure any of that refutes the scenario I laid out. Google denying adsense payments is exactly what I said would happen. It would then be up to the site as to whether or not they would continue to allow traffic from users who the
