I haven't used windows for 20 years and yesterday I had a teams teleconference using Firefox on Linux. It works noticeably more poorly than most similar systems (jit.si for the win) but it works.

Yep. I've just seen an interview of a custom officer here in France. In the past 25 years the amount of foreign goods entering the country has more than doubled; in the meanwhile, the number of custom officers was slashed by 30% (in Ge

Productivity is simply putting more machines at work for every person. More machines require more energy and resources. Since 1973 (and even 1971, remember when the US reached peak oil and immediately removed the peg between the dollar and

Yep. I remember back in 2003 when I wrote a personal letter to all EU MPs to ask them to reject software patents. Software patents enforcement would have been terrible for EU software and a boon for the rich US software company who constant

Kutna Hora is incredible. There are 2 large gothic cathedrals there, 1 km from each other. The first one (next to the ossuary) has many martyrs skeletons clothed in gold and jewels, offered to the church by the Pope back in the 1500s (these

Ah I've been quite happy with LizardFS (which is a fork of MooseFS) and I found Ceph to be a bit of a letdown (too complex to manage). Well, time to try Seaweed then :)

Yeah it was great. Unfortunately mine had a (quite common IIRC) fatal failure: the IDE port for the hard drive ceased working (it could still be used with a Firewire disk but...).

I've been using for about 20 years fetchmail, procmail and spamassassin to locally deliver email, that I can then read either with mutt (when I'm remotely connected, mostly) or claws-mail. Frankly, nothing can beat that setup IMO

The problem isn't the Africans with a ridiculously small environmental footprint. The problem is with moguls such as Bill Gates constantly flying in private jet, having more impact each day than an African over their whole life.
