I'm surprised this is considered news and that it made the front page. Of course natural selection is still at work. Anyone who finds that surprising doesn't really understand evolution theory.

The earth, when shrunk down to the size of a billiard ball, is also smoother than a billiard ball: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_earth_smoother_than_a_billiard_... :)

A simple browser extension like Readability or Instapaper can extract the article and display it in a readable manner. That way you don't have to miss out on potentially interesting articles if you don't like the design or are distracted by

You could save a local copy of the html and javascript to make sure you're using the same code every time. You'd probably have to make a few tiny changes (absolute/relative URLs, etc), though.

Can someone copy-paste what was originally here? This discussion thread makes no sense at all.

I think this system is well thought out. It has a beautiful, minimal design that actually let's you focus on the reading, once you're done playing with the kudos button. The only criticism I have is that it relies on sites like Hacker News

I think the OS X version is a bit confusing, to be honest. There are too many elements sliding around and resizing. The problem it aims to fix is also still partially unsolved when the screen is dragged 'too far' ( http://i.imgur.com/Q4Ktw.

Luckily you won't have this problem if it would be implemented. You can't have the cursor float in mid-air next to your screen.

No. I never said that nor implied that. I believe Linus can express this particular opinion in a much more civilised way (especially since he has such a special position in the tech-world), just as the restaurant guest that's talking obnoxi

Regardless of wether you were making excuses or not, my point still stands, I think. Ignoring the problem might be a good way to deal with situations like this on a personal level. I'd say it's probably the wisest thing to do, because, as y

I fail to see which one is public and which one is private in this case. They're both public in my opinion, but I could be wrong.

I think you misunderstood my analogy. My point is, that obnoxious loud talking at a restaurant is as difficult to avoid as an interesting sounding link on a major tech news aggregator.

I find that a weak excuse. If you were to dine in an expensive restaurant, where one of their guests talked really loudly on his cell phone all night, disturbing the other guests, you wouldn't expect the waiter to tell you to "just ignore i

I'm familiar with the processes. I get what the writer of the plugin is going for. I just think it would look better if the effects were applied with an image editor like Photoshop.

I don't really see why I would use something like this. Just eye candy? With the exception of the 4th picture, they all come out worse. The last image (of the boat) suffers in particular. If you're considering using this plugin, I'd first c

I think facebook did a great job with their Messenger app. Most people are on facebook already (so the no sign up sales pitch isn't very convincing), it's available on almost every smartphone (and not just a particular brand like Blackberry

I would go for node.js (basically server-side javascript) on the backend if you're going to work with a lot of data. Both because it could be fun and is especially good at handling lots of data quickly. It would be possible to write the web

Can you elaborate on that? If there's an infinite supply of something and say, a demand for that product with 20% of the people, wouldn't the situation be worse for the entertainment companies? I left the costs etc out of the equation, whic

This is something everyone that talks about this topic needs to understand. Basic economics teach us that an infinite supply comes at the price of (near) zero. The amount of music, movies, software (products) that can be distributed is only

I hate to generalise, but in my personal experience people that are somewhat less computer literate do indeed visit the homepage to search. I've seen my parents do it countless times, even though I told them searching from the address bar i
